Why Use PayPal

I see more and more the ability to use PayPal for online purchases. I have never used PayPal and I am a little leary. Is there a membership fee or a fee to use PayPal? Or any other hidden fees?

I would like to know of experiences (good and bad) using PayPal for online purchases.

I believe there is a fee for the seller. To my knowledge it's a secure, insured transaction. I've used it on Ebay purchases, I don't use vendors who won't accept it. Never had a problem with it.

I've been using PayPal for a number of years now without any major complaints. There are always bumps in the road no matter what you do, however.

Quite frankly, if you do any sort of commerce on the internet, it's becoming pretty much a requirement that you have a PayPal account.

As for fees, no, none to sign up. But if you take payments via PayPal, there are fees involved in the transaction of funds TO you.

The seller only has fees if the buyer pays by credit card, which is why on most sites like ebay, for sale forum sections youll see the poster ask for a 3% additional charge, cause paypal takes 3% from the sale. If the buyer has funds already in the paypal account no fees are taken away.

Back in my srt days, it always seemed paypal sided with the scammers, if i find the thread from that forum ill post it, it was close to 75 pages from one person. He got 13k dollars off scamming posters for parts...paypal sided with him everytime. My part was getting a picture of a cold air intake on the car and silver. what i got in the box was a black cracked air box, blue piping wrapped in electrical tape and the piping had been hacked to hell trying to fit it on something smaller(piping made for a 50/60 trim turbo not a stock td04 turbo 3" vs 2 or 2.5"). I sent both pictures he sent me, forwarded the email, eveeerything, paypal said he sent the goods an you accepted. so i was out 175 bucks.

As with anything on the net, it's buyer beware!

You have limited protection and good luck finding a phone number in which to call a live body in the case of an emergency. They (like many on line companies) suck at customer service and hide behind e-mail accounts:thumbsdown:

I have a PayPal account but only used it to set up the Deputies relief fund account.

Other than that, I don't use it or take it.

The fees are similar to credit card transaction fees if you take credit cards for payment.

I have a close friend who recently went through a nightmare with them. She was charged back something and it over drew the account she had attached to it.
They continued to charge her account even though she informed them of the problem.
Bottom line, she had to close the bank account she had attached to the PayPal account to get them to stop....the fees and such were enormous!

As far as doing business with people on the internet, I've never had a problem sending a check or money order or in some cases, using a credit card. At least that way I have "some" level of protection.

Unfortunately, that's about true:nonod:

It's because of this that many times I'll buy elsewhere if that's the only form of payment they'll accept. Otherwise, I'll demand to use a M/O or Credit card vs. Paypal. Not much for being held over a barrell and I like having a bit more control over my purchases.

I've had no problems with PayPal over the last 2-3 years. Seems pretty straight forward to me.

I've been using PayPal for 9 years and never had a problem that they caused
PayPal was bought by Ebay awhile back

When I was into slot cars, I bought a lot from Europe and PayPal made all the currency conversions and made the transactions flow quick :yesnod:

I won't make a purchase from a seller who wants paypal fees paid for by the buyer. Just factor it in the price and don't advertise it.
Asking for the 3% to cover the fees on an ebay auction is not allowed and you can get banned for doing it :NoNo:

Credit cards, from a seller's standpoint, are not much better, if at all. Unless you have a signed paper receipt from the buyer, then can dispute any charge made to them by you for payment of goods or services. And they will probably WIN, no matter what evidence you provide in dispute of their claim.

Like it or not, there is an awful amount of trust involved in nearly all transactions done these days. Which is why scammers abound.

Heck, I got a counterfeit postal money order once from someone trying to buy a camera from me. Or I guess I should say, trying to get it for free. I turned that one over to the postal authorities, but never heard the outcome.

And there is a reason why the grocery stores check nearly all paper currency with that counterfeit checking pen these days......

Seems to me that the savings is hardly worth the risk...I buy the following things on e bay:

:rofl1:

For the most part, me too:thumbsup:

I've bought a few more than that, but not much. I much prefer a personal transaction, but that's not always possible. Same with some specialty parts, like stuff for my 89 Landcruiser.

But I'm real cautious.

As for the reliability and safety of PP, as I said, there's always risk.

I used PP on Ebay several years ago and got burned by both. Item I purchased never showed up and when I went to PP and Ebay, you had to go through hoops during the claims process which I did and still no results...Will never use PP again... if merchant does not accept CCs, they are not worse doing business with...
