Question Internal leak in C5 6 speed tranny

Just checking to see if anyone else is having this problem. I have a 2000 C5 and I noticed oil on the tranny casing when I was changing the oil a couple of months ago. The car only had about 57,000 miles on it. Took it in to my corvette mechanic here in clearwater to have the differential fluids changed and have him check out the tranny leak. He told me it is an internal leak and I should wait till I have the clutch replaced to fix it. There is no constant drip and the spots on the driveway are smaller then a dime. Trying to see if this is a common problem like the noisy clutches in the differential. If so I will go to the dealer. Thanks for any info.

Sounds to me as though the output shaft seal has gone bad and is letting the diff oil into the trans. You would probably have trans fluid in the diff oil as well. If a clutch is in your plans, then it would be good to do this all at once in order to save on labor, as everything is in the same area. I would definately adress this issue as soon as I could though. The differentials and transmissions are picky about their specific lubricants. If this is left unattended, you could have transmission/differential issues. Best of luck to you!

Question C5 6 speed tranny leak

Thanks for the response. I just had the differential fluid changed by Vern the corvette specialist on this side of the bay and he didn't mention seeing any transmission fluid in the old differential fluid. He also checked the tranny fluid and felt it was okay for now. Is it possible that a front internal seal is bad? I sure would like GM to fix this problem as I only had 57,000 miles on the car when this started. I thought these trannys are supposed to go over 100,000 miles before changing the fluid. If thats the case then the seals should have been designed to last. Thanks again for the input and any help offered to try and help me solve this issue.

The front seal of the transmission, if bad would only leak out fluid to the ground. At the front, it only connects to the torque tube which is dry. So the only place for an internal leak would be between the trans/differential.

Chevrolet replaced my trans rear case at 24,000 miles!! It had a Casting Flaw in it!! It started out as a very small seepage!!(didn't even drip)And finely grew to the size of a Golf Ball on the floor!!! A very small casting crack between 2 bolts on the left side!!
