I came home tonight and the wife informed me that the big screen that we've had for several years, finally quit working today:nonod:
Won't power up at all. Tried "rebooting" it, and everything else I can think of. It's just old and tired.

So....looks like we're going to be in the market for a new family room big screen. (Ho, Ho, freaki' Ho!)

So, any suggestions from the group regarding make, model, wall mount or console?

I'm leaning toward the wall mounted plasma's.

I'm alll :bigear:'s

What kind is it?
First thing I'd do is check the fuses!!:thumbsup:
Yep,there will be a few fuses in that thing,
just be careful!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:
A un-plugged TV can still Hit your A$$ harder than a High ENERGY MSD Coil wired to a U-Ryan-el !!

Don't Piss on it!!:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Yeah, I recall helping my dad back in the day and his warnings about avoiding the rear of the tube and the stored energy.

It's a Toshiba.

I didn't realize these things have fuses! Guess it makes sense though:thumbsup:
I'll see if I can pull a manual on it somewhere.

Thanks:thumbsup:

I'll try to keep that in mind...:rofl1:

Yeah,The Old Tube type TV's with a fly-back transformer could pop you with 120,000 volts and really make tears run down your leg!!~!!:banghead:

You'll need the model #'s off the back of the set!!:thumbsup:

Owners Manuel probly won't say a thing about internal fuses,You'll need the Wiring Schematic!~!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:
But I can tell you the fuses will be in the power supply close to where the the power cord go's in,but they may be the type that have to be soldered in!!!!:D

Thanks:thumbsup::
No Problem for you Shadow the Sky is the limit,If I was down there,I'd stop by and see what I could do!!!!:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Good,I'd hate to read about you staggering around back-wards shak'n like a dog sh*tting peach seeds!!:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Sony Bravia has gotten awesome reviews and a couple of my friends have the Sony and love it. One has the 46" and the other is in the 50" range. It is a LCD 1080p 120 hrtz set. Consumer Reports rates this among the best.
The 1080p format is HD all the way. The higher the hertz, the less bluring you'll have. Look for 120 hertz or more.
I personally have a 65" Plasma made by Vidikron which is owned by Ronco. They make high end digital sets and can be found at your higher end TV-Stero stores, not Best Buy or HHGreg. It is a bit pricey and I think the LCD Sony would still be your best bet. You could probably pick up a 46" Sony on sale for less than 1800.00 or so. Don't forget you will also need a stero receiver with surround sound and sub woofer capabilties for awesome music experience. The stores will usually have package deals and I would get the best you can afford. I would plan on at least 800.00 or more for this.
You are more than welcome to see my setup anytime. Give me a shout if interested. Hope this helps. :thumbsup:

Dang dude!
I'm coming to live with you!:lmao:

Thanks for the information:thumbsup:

I've got a repair person coming out later today or tomorrow and will see what he says?
If it's not easily and relatively inexpensive (or worth it), then I'll start looking at the Sony.

Thanks again Mark.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

We are very happy with our Vizio's. They also have an excellent rating in Consumers Guide. Their cheapest 55" is on sale for $995. I'm waiting till it drops to $800 and then I'll get one. Prices are supposed to keep dropping on TV's through Dec.

The 37" in the bedroom is on a higher than normal stand for easier viewing from a prone position. The TV actually hangs onto the stand just like a wall mount. The one in the den is on a normal stand and the one we haven't got yet (55") will be on a stand in the living room. Wall mounts are expensive and if you're going to do it right cables and power should be run inside the wall. What a pain.

Yeah, I would probably try to hold out till the Christmas sales really kick in.

We have a 50 inch Panasonic plasma that we've had for several years now and it's holding up just fine.

Best thing to do would be to just browse through stores and look at the screens themselves and compare how they look to YOUR eyes. Then check for reviews online. Once you know the model you want, then you can start looking for the best price.

And yeah, don't skimp on the sound system. Even a modest subwoofer will make a hell of a difference when watching those action movies.

Good luck!

Addendum to previous message: You really have to watch the sales and make sure you are buying the correct TV. The sale items will usually be 200-400.00 less for a 46" Sony Bravia with 60 hertz vs a Sony Bravia 46" 120 hertz. Just be really careful with the switch and bait BS. Better yet, take me with you and between you and me, we'll tower over the sales folks and bait and switch will be the last thang on their mind!!! :lmao:
Seriously though, come down and drink a beer or two or three or.... and check out my set up if you want. Of course, we'll have to start at the Boiler Room and tear into some Philly Cheese Steaks first. :thumbsup:

PS: Pay more for Hertz. It's worth it. I'd even look at the 240 hertz and compare to the 120 hertz. Avoid anything below 120 hertz. Just my humble .02 worth.

This is sounding more and more like a plan every minute!:thumbsup::dancer01:

Thanks Rich.

I've called a repair person and hopefully, I can milk this one throug at least Christmas.
Save my pennies and get a kick azz system like I've always wanted!
I don't finance anything anymore if I can help it, so it'll have to be a cash deal. Then again....sometimes that works in your advantage:thumbsup::D

Yeah, I agree. Going into debt for anything these days may not be a wise move. If you have to use a credit card, treat it like a 30 day loan that needs to be paid in full when you receive the bill.

Gordon, most of the TV- Stereo outfits will let you finance interest free for up to a year and as long as you pay within the year, no interest. If you miss it by a day, all the interest will be added. Just a thought.

I have to give Samsung a :thumbsup:. I have a few of every flavor :D

61" DLP in the family room
50" Plasma wall mount in the Billiard room
46" LCD wall mount on the Lanai by the pool
40" LCD wall mount in my office

DLP's take up more room but have a great picture and are usually less expensive.

LCD's look great and are less effected by sunlight

Plasma gets hotter, has a glass screen that tends to reflect things in the room with only a little bit of sunlight that can be annoying but have a great picture and weight twice as much on average with an LCD

I haven't tried the new LED's but hear a mix of good and bad with them, guess cause there still new.

If your lucky the power supply on yours can be replaced by the repairman you've contacted and will probably last several more years, but where's the fun in that :lmao:

good luck

I have a Samsung 55 lcd, same deal bought it when the projection model died, my son bought a Sony 55 at about the same time , both are good.
I was just at a customers house that had a 65 LED installed, nice picture , but not sure what the diff is between LCD & LED.

That's exactly what we've started doing Rich:thumbsup:
When we have to use a card for anything, it's paid off within the month, 2 at most.
And that's only for medical and transportation emergencies!

I can alway ghetto it and hook up one of my wide screen computer screens if I have to.:D

Thanks Mark. We've done that before, and would again if "necessary", but as long as I can avoid it, I will. I hate owing anyone!

I was "sort of" lucky.
It seems it was one of the (or the) bulb, and at $250.00, tax, tag, title and service call, it'll be fixed:dancer01::dancer01:

The fun?

Now I can save up and buy the killer system I want and not be forced to settle due to kid/grandkid pressure:D:thumbsup:

Thanks to everyone for your advise and recommendations. Definately going to be doing some research over the next month or 2:thumbsup:

Mark, I'm still comming down there:lmao::thumbsup:

I will have to give props to Samsung. I have a 52" lcd thats almost 3yrs old, and still same display as it was when I took it out of the box.

When looking at TVs make sure you keep in mind the contrast ratio of the picture. Anything under 15,000:1 will look like arse.

Plasmas are better then LCDs when it comes to display, but they come at a cost. They run hotter, and very limited on being moved (last time I read, plasmas dont like to be laid on their sides and what not so transporting them becomes a problem when it comes to space).

Best thing to do, is go to a local Bestbuy/HHGregg and look at the displays. I put a lot of research into my tv, and it has paid off well.
