427 engine (part 2) - RHS block

Great news Rich about your car. It looks like it will be at least another 2-3 weeks before I may get mine back. Still waiting on the block to get back.

Rats............... :banghead:

Got a call from Aaron today and he told me that the scavenge pump for the turbos stopped working. It was working fine while on the dyno before the transmission and differential got replaced, so my guess is a wire got cut or pulled loose. Aaron says the pump isn't getting power, so I'm hoping it will be easy to track down.

He was getting ready to take it out for a test drive before having me come up and take it home to break in the clutch, so this is a setback. But it shouldn't be a BIG setback. It's still possible I might be driving it home before the weekend.

Got my fingers crossed.

Getting closer.....

Aaron called me today and said he had the car out and put about 20 miles on it test driving. Everything seems to be working fine so far. He's going to be putting some more miles on it tomorrow (Friday) to make sure there are no lurking problems that might bite me when I drive it. He's thinking maybe I shouldn't drive it home and should instead just drive it around Thomasville so I'll be close by in case any snag rears it's ugly head. I guess he got the turbos rewired as he said it goes into boost OK. He said it's pretty easy breaking the tires loose in third gear. And that's with only a cursory startup tune done on it.

I don't think this will take place tomorrow, so I'm guessing early next week sometime I'll be driving it around. Have to see when Jim Smith can come back into town to finish up the final tuning.

Been clearing out a spot in the garage for it, as you know how things tend to creep into empty spots in a garage when you aren't looking. It's amazing how many garages I see where the junk took over and pushed all the cars out into the driveway. That is NOT going to happen here!

Pick that baby up and drive her home. Take it back when the tuner is there. If he drove it 20 miles and is driving it more tomorrow I wouldn't worry about it. You driving it down Jan 15?

I haven't made any plans that far in advance. :shrug01:

Dammit......

Well, got a call from Aaron with some bad news. I knew things seemed to be going too well.... The flimsy valve covers that Chris put on my engine won't seal properly and are leaking around the gaskets. When Aaron tightens down the screws, all it does is bends the center inwards, which distorts the covers, just making things worse.

Well that certainly now throws a monkey wrench into things. We have to find some custom valve covers that will be thick enough to seal, and tall enough to clear those Jesel rocker arms.

I was really hoping for some good God damned news today........

Yeah, been looking around. Looks like I'm going to have to fork out even more money out of my pockets for this. :banghead: And this is going to push back my getting the car for at least another week.

Is there a difference between the valve covers needed for LS7, LS2, or LS 1/6 heads? I believe those heads I got are LS7 style.

Seriously, I'm thinking I should have cut my losses long ago and parted the car out. This crap is getting REAL old now... Heading towards the 14 month goalpost now....... :bang:

What about a double gasket while you're looking for better covers? Gets you into the car for a good shakedown. Then when the new covers come in you can get everything finished.

I thought about that with my truck air ride suspension fiasco. I almost sold it a year ago and REALLY glad I didn't. It's an absolute blast to drive. I've still have a ton of things to do to it, but I really can't imagine not having it in my driveway.

Yeah, I asked Aaron about that, but he indicated that it wouldn't help. I guess it's because the flimsy metal of the covers flexes too much and just won't tighten down. The covers just BEND rather than tighten.

Probably some cheap Chinese crap.......

Time for a little reverse psychology.

After all this time you are going to quit now over a little set of valve covers and gasket. Give me a break my grandmother can change a valve cover. :hehehe::hehehe:

Just make sure it gets added to the bill for well you know.l

Ever heard the phrase "the straw that broke the camel's back"?

I'm just sick and tired of this whole mess. Made all the worse because I thought the nightmare was just about over with this weekend. This son of a bitch is likely going to haunt me for the rest of my damned life.

The car is awesome, and is a "one of a kind" build. Your almost there Rich!! Hang on and enjoy.

Yeah, it certainly is unique. A monument to a damned bad decision on my part.

It took me about 39 years to forget the lesson that my '66 GTO impressed upon me. Fortunately I won't live long enough to forget THIS lesson. Not that Connie would LET me forget it, anyway.... :spank2:
