Clunking noise

Guro305

Ok, hopefully someone out there knows. Recently I'm hearing this clunking noise in my car.

It's usually when going up speed bumps or making quick sharp turns. The first thing I did was to push the car's rear up and down (that's where the noise seems to be coming from) to see if maybe it was the springs. Nothing. Then I started trying to wiggle the exhaust and it seemed pretty firm.

Next, I told my wife (who can hear the clunk too) to get in the car while I did the previous two things and she couldn't hear anything either. This only happens when driving. Funny part is we both claim to hear it from our side.
Any thoughts????:shrug01:

ALS2052 told me of this same problem on the C6. GM has a TSB covering this. Maybe the TSB covers the C5 as well. I had the TSB number in an email which I lost.

Check the CV axel nuts at the rear Hub assembly, there bad to work loose on C5's!!!:thumbsup:

As JCB_NJB mentioned above the C6s are afflicted with this malady. My A4 was clunking and grinding. Dealer changed diff fluid and so far so good.If they have to they will change fluid again before they tear into the torque convertor. Do not know is C5s were part of this TSB. If you are still under warranty, maybe be worth you while to check into it with your dealer. Good luck.

Never seen a C5 with a Cotter pin!!:shrug01:

Sorry, never noticed it when I took the tires off. Most cars I've seen have a cotter pin at the end. I'll check it out Saturday make sure everything is nice and tight. Still need to know how much fluid for the diff' and what kind. Anyone?

The only clunking I've ever had coming from the rear of the car turned out to be one side of my exhaust pipes being loose.

That's exactly what it sounded like to me! However, with someone in the car and me shaking the hell outta both of them, it doesn't make a sound. I guess the only way to know for sure is to get under the car.

Yeah, I couldn't reproduce the sound either until I got underneath it. Good luck.
