Rumor: G8 to return as high-end “four-door Corvette?”

Curacao

Island in the Caribbean.
We’ve started taking everything we’ve heard about the return of the Pontiac G8, or at least some variation of General Motors’ highly-vaunted Zeta platform with a grain of salt, but now word comes from Bob Lutz himself that the G8 could return as a high-end Chevrolet envisioned as a four-door to complement the automaker’s iconic Corvette.

Social media guru Joel Feder is currently attending a GM media event aimed at Twitterers and bloggers in Milford, Michigan, where he reported on his Twitter feed that Bob Lutz is not ruling out the return of the G8 platform to North America.

“High end brakes, huge engine, big and fast. Like four door corvette,” Feder wrote, verbatim, on Twitter after a brief chat with Lutz. Though hardly an official comment from Lutz, it seems that the General’s car guru will still not write off the possibility of a four-door, performance-oriented sedan based on the Zeta platform for North America. Lutz did tell Feder that the Caprice name is a no-go, however. GM rebadges the Holden Commodore, which also served as the basis for the now-defunct G8, as the Chevrolet Caprice for some markets.

GM is believed to have a contractual obligation for export models with the Australian factory that builds the large sedan.

Probably use the Cadillac CTS-V version of the LS-9 in a cheaper car...WOW!! Think about it! 556 HP and 550 ft.lbs. of torque in a 4 door sedan like a G8 for, what, maybe $40,000.00? That would be cool!

:thumbsup:I agree.
I wonder what the power to weight is on that set up?

From one of the side shots, it's sort of BMW-esque, not a bad thing for a 4 door ride:thumbsup:

If the handeling is there, it could be fun and practical too.

This comment on that page had me rolling:

Sgt Pepper wrote What is this BS. Its gonna return as a Caprice its gonna return as a Corvette. Its gonna return as a george forman grill. Give me a break
:lmao::lmao::lmao::lmao:

I like it call it Impala and off they can go to the show room floors.
The problem is can GM build a BMW quality sedan. The present
government owned GM (USGM) dose'nt have the will and motivation
to produce this kind of car. GM is moving to low powered small fuel
efficient cars and we will see whether the public will accept them
this time around.

I had a discussion with a guy I know that has had (and still does) several performance cars, both foreign and domestic, about the CTS-V, and he pointed out that the quality of the American cars just wasn't up to par in his book. I showed him a road test comparing the CTS-V with a BMW, suggesting he might want to take a look at the Cadillac. He readily admits the American horsepower is far and away the winner, but when he buys a Mercedes, or a BMW, or a Porshe it comes without the rattles and squeaks and ill fitting body panels that seem to be the norm with the Corvettes, Charger R/T's, Cobra's, and the like that he has owned of late. Anyone care to comment?

I certainly can't comment on the quality of Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, etc. I'm sure they're very fine cars. I can say that I bought my ZO6 new in '02 and have had none of the issues described with squeaks, rattles, etc. It's as quiet and well put together (IMHO) as it was when it rolled off the factory floor. When I close the door, it sounds as solid as it did 7 years ago. I've been, and still am, very happy with it. I believe people tend to nit-pick a bit too much when it comes to cars. I wanted a Corvette so I bought a Corvette. And even if I could have afforded a car 3-4 times the cost of my Z, I would still have bought a Corvette.:yesnod:
