1966 Vette headlights

At a loss and need advise. 1966 Vette headlights - when the headlights are on bright the red light on the dash is not on, press the dimmer switch and the headlights go to dim but the red light on the dash now comes on. Any ideas on what could cause this? Believe something must be connected/wired incorrectly.
