427 engine (part 2) - RHS block

I sure hope Rich has a safe journey back with his car. Hope gets to get out and enjoy driving it again. We both went through some bad experiences with Harwood.

I don't want to be premature as I have followed this build from the beginning, but I am assuming since you are going to pick it up today hopefully then congratulations on finally getting the car back. :dancer01:

Yeah, well.........

So Connie and I got up this morning and got all ready to head up to Thomasville to FINALLY pick up my car, and I'm not getting any answer on the phone trying to reach Aaron to let him know we're heading up. This is a bit before 10 am. So I track down his cell phone number in my notebooks and reach him that way. He tells me he's half way to Albany this morning and won't be back till between 1:30 and 2:00. I have to confess that I got a bit hot under the collar at that. I said that my car has been tied up for two whole years and I REALLY want to get it back today. Aaron's reply was just something vague about "exceptional circumstances."

I guess it's just me and I'm just feeling a mite bit overly impatient. And in reality, I've only been without this car for a measly 2 years. No big deal, right? Doesn't really matter when I actually do get the car back, right?

:shrug01:

I just got tired of telling Connie we were going to get the car, and she goes in and does her hair getting ready to head out, and I either don't hear from Aaron, or whatever. He never apologized about Monday, and when I spoke to him today, he had an edge on his voice like I was bothering him with my call. So Connie and I just went out and did some shopping for some stuff we've been putting off doing thinking every dang day for the past week (except Wednesday when Connie worked) we were going to be driving up to Thomasville to pick up my car. Aaron had a couple of messages on my answering machine when we got back, but I'll be perfectly honest, I was still steaming and didn't think a conversation with him this evening would be in either of our best interests.

Ah piss on it. This is just frickin' ridiculous. Obviously Aaron getting my car to me is not top on his priority list this week. I don't know what is, but I'm done trying to nail down a day and time for that to happen.

Yeah, sorry about the grousing, but the "being patient" thing has done run COMPLETELY out for me...

Here's the dyno sheet from I think the last run Aaron did at the shop...

As for it being perfect, no, it's not that, for certain. There is a very noticeable stumble in the engine between around 1400 and 2000 rpm (plus or minus 10 percent). I hope it can be fixed as it's pretty disconcerting. It feels like the engine is missing like crazy. Perhaps it will work itself out, but somehow I don't think so. Aaron did tell me about it, but I had hoped it wouldn't be as bad as it seems to me. I'll try to drive it some more later on maybe this weekend. Maybe I'm just being hyper sensitive to everything about the car right now.

The new clutch coupled with the lightweight drivetrain components (flywheel, clutch, CF driveshaft) is going to take some getting used to. It feels like there is almost NO torque below 1500 rpm.

Lots of rattles and clanks from the drivetrain and possibly the suspension somewhere. I need to put it on the lift tomorrow to take a look. I do see that one of the pipes for the turbo is peaking out between the plastic wheel shroud and the lip of the wheel well on the right quarter panel. Don't know if that has shifted and causing some of the noise I hear.

The car does feel like it has a LOT of power on tap, but that low RPM stumble makes street driving unnerving. I have to either keep the rpms BELOW that range and feel like there is NO power, or else put it ABOVE that range and have my ears ringing from the roaring. The car is DARN loud. Between that stumbling and the above mentioned low torque feel, moving the car from a dead stop had me worried to death I was going to stall the car in traffic.

Aaron warned me that I have to try to keep the gas tank at least 1/4 filled, as that fuel pump seems to have trouble priming itself if it gets too low. So of course, the fuel gauge died on me half way home. Just flipped to EMPTY and sits there. Go figure...... :banghead: The one gauge I need to really keep my eye on decides to fail.

Oh yeah, and the CHECK ENGINE light is glowing merrily at me. Again, Aaron told me that would happen. It did blink when I first noticed it, but then eventually settled into being solidly ON.

But at least nothing fell off while driving home that I am aware of. Connie would have seen it, as she followed me home in her truck. The engine didn't blow up or die, and no smoke or flames were apparent.

Beyond that, yep, the bill was a bitter pill to have to pay after paying as much as I did to Harwood for all this SUPPOSED to have been done by him.

But the car is back home, at least.

692 hp at the rear wheels....that works out to around 767 at the engine. I'll bet that's pretty brutal when it comes on....hopefully you'll stumble across one of those 2013 Shelby 500's one day!:reddevil: Glad you finally got it back!

Congrats on the car getting home. Just a thought I had about the check engine light. Do you have an EGR on this set up? The reason for the question is if the ECM is looking for the egr readings and it is not there it will turn the sys light on. At least it does on my 93.

No. Aaron mentioned to me that he disconnected and removed the EGR stuff. I'm planning on taking out my laptop and hooking up HPtuners to capture the tune file and check for error codes. I wish I had had the time to learn the ins and outs of tuning these critters. I guess now that I'm retired, maybe it's something I just need to do.

As for video, the original plan was for me to put one camcorder inside the C5Z and Connie to have one mounted in her truck while driving behind me. But since we couldn't pick the car up till pretty late and it would be dark most of the way home, and we were kind of rushed to get out the door as it is, we had to scrap that idea. I had her truck all set up with the camera mount on Monday morning, but when things fell apart to pick up the car, I had to remove it for her to go to work on Wednesday. Just didn't bother to put it back in afterwards as I didn't know what was going to happen.

As for what DID happen between Aaron and I concerning picking up my car, I guess I just snapped after all this time and being so close to the finish line with the goal posts getting moved on me yet again. Aaron had some people in from out of the country plus other stuff going on that he felt he needed to give a higher priority. I think we both had just had enough of that car. In any event we came away from this still as friends and no grudges. We were both just under a lot of stress at the same time.

If they did not remove the egr program from the ecm that could be your problem with the sys light and the stumble.

I believe Aaron told me that Jim did remove that coding, but I assume if not, it will show up in the error codes.

Im glad she's back home. With that HP, a little stab of the throttle will make you smile and forget most of the problems.

Get some nice miles on the car, and let it break in. Maybe its hungry for fuel at the low RPMs, but it could be turbo lag while building boost, or not enough timing in the low RPM areas.
