427 engine (part 2) - RHS block

I guess it just depends on how you want it to end.

You can remember it as a really bad experience that is over but that you finish and can drive the car.

Or you can remeber it as a complete failure with the same bad feelings as the option above with the added suck that you didn't get to drive it.

I'm just tired of the emotional ups and downs with this thing. Shame the economy sucks or I would just put a FOR SALE sign on it and be done with it. This was supposed to be an exciting event that I could take to the shows and show off, but now it's a blight that I'll probably just hide in the garage. It's a damned embarrassment to me on so many levels...
 
Yeah, but I remember back to when the "build" started. There was nothing out there
about Chris Harwood doing what he's done. All of that has happened since you made the
decision to modify the Z06. Seems to me that your decision was based on the info you
had at the time, and you would have DEFINITELY made another decision knowing what
you know now. Don't beat yourself up over it, cause at the time, it seemed to be a good
decision. Once the car is done, and this whole unfortunate situation is behind you,
get out and drive the wheels off of that beast and enjoy the living $*!T out of it.
Kicking it in third gear and twisting the tires GOTTA put a smile on ANYONE'S face.
(And maybe something else in one's skivvies :eek:!:lmao:)

OK I can understand the emotional ups and downs. As for giving up on your dream of being able to take it to shows and show it off well that has not been taken away from you if you don't want it to be. I don't know about all the other people who have been following your roller coaster ride with your car. I for one would give anything to be able to see your car at a show and also shake the hand of of the guy that has the keys to this dream car. It would send a shiver up my back just to hear it start and idle let alone see it drive away. As for it being an embarrassment I don't think so. As I have said in this forum before I have admired your civility and patience with the situation you were in. In my book you were and still are an example to all of us on how to give others the benefit of not condemning them prematurely or bashing them in public without proper provocation. Yes there really is a Santa Claus and sometimes he delivers his goodies in an awesome blue Corvette

Hind sight is 20/20. To bad we don't all have it. It will be all good Rich.

If I could go back a few years and do stuff differantly I would in a second, but we move on with what we have & what we can do.
 
Been talking to Aaron trying to get this valve cover mess straightened out. I went through and checked some video I took to see if I could get an idea of what new valve covers I really DO NOT want, in order to make sure I'm not right back in the same mess, and I found a view that I can actually see the driver's side valve covers warped towards the center around the hold down bolts. They are just too cheap and too flimsy for the job, obviously.

Still up in the air about what to do about this, but there isn't any cheap way out of it. I'm trying to strike a balance between something that looks nice, is reasonably priced, and will just do the job. Some options would mean ignition coil relocation which would add $300 to $350 to the price right off the bat, so I don't think I'm going to get out of this very lightly... :banghead:

Well, that's just lovely.

Aaron tells me that the Granatelli valve covers will work out just fine, but when I called Granatelli, they don't have them in stock and it takes two weeks to make them. I got a bit concerned because they show two different styles, one for the LS1/LS6 and the other for the LS2/LS3/LS7. Not wanting to make a BIG mistake ordering the wrong ones, I called Bryan at LME and asked him. He said the LS6 ones are likely the ones I need. He suggested Katech valve covers and offered to track some down for me, but he came up empty handed, as they apparently are on backorder. So I just gritted my teeth and placed an order for the Granatelli ones. So they aren't going to be showing up till the week of Christmas.

You know, Connie has been saying all along that my car won't be done till Christmas, and I ALMOST bet her that it would be done before then. Yeah, that would have been another $500 bet I would have lost........ :banghead:

Wish I had been smart enough to sell the car way back when. Of course, had I done that, I'd have someone beating up on ME because of a transmission and differential that was supposed to be in the car, that really wasn't..........

The new ones are costing me around $700, as they come with new coil brackets.

The type of valve cover wasn't specified beyond being attractive to look at and WORKING for the application intended. The ones Harwood put on the engine were in my opinion cheaply made and obviously fabricated with metal too thin and flimsy for the job.

This isn't just a matter of waiting for the other shoe to drop, this is a case of wondering just how many shoes there are TO drop........

No more shoes to drop Rich. Aaron would know by now. It doesn't surprise me Harwood would install junk but everything else is a known fact at this point. I would bet when these are replaced you'll be good to go.
 
if it were me and i was in a hurry to ride i would get a new set of gaskets, coat them with permatex sealant, install them and worry about it when they started leaking again.

but i don't drive a Vette and all my motors are dirty, so i wouldn't think twice about using permatex. Aaron on the other hand would more than likely have issues doing that....

Actually, no, I'm not really in a hurry to drive it. I've just had enough of this and want to put this all behind me.

I did mention to Aaron about possibly using a double gasket and permatex, but he didn't like the idea at all. Plus I'm not at all sure how long it would hold up with the valve covers being as flimsy as they are.

Yeah, there were faster and perhaps cheaper ways to resolve this problem, but I have to agree with Aaron that it really should be done the RIGHT way now.
 
Man, Rich.........this continuing saga SUX. There is, at least, one good thing to
come out of all of this. This thread should be REQUIRED reading for anyone else
planning to mod their car and having someone else do it. I've learned a bunch
just by keeping my eye on this thread, and it seems like Aaron and his crew are
building (or continuing to build) a good reputation with the readers of this forum.
All I can say about the C5 is that I'm sorry that you are going thru all of this, let's
call it what it really is, BULL$H!T, and to thank you and everyone else that's posted
for starting this thread and keeping it going. It truly does make for some "interesting"
reading, and shows what some people are capable of doing. I really hope that
when you get the C5 back, it runs like a scalded dog and has absolutely ZERO issues!

Yes, that does seem to be the case..... Chris Harwood can't say I didn't warn him about this probability.... But nobody held a gun to his head to force him to take the path he chose to take.
