700r4 Rebuild?

Not directly corvette related, but could apply to others as well. My 700r4 in my 89 chevy truck is finally on it's last leg (200,000+ miles). Looking for any recommendations for a shop in the Clearwater/St Pete area. Wish I could drop the trans my self, but my truck would be the one to carry it to the shop. I thought about just getting an el cheapo off of craigslist to buy me some time, but I'd like to get a couple of real quotes to see what I know I'll eventually need to do anyway. A bonus would be a new shop that'd swap hours for graphic design/web work.

Can't recommend anyone in that area 'cause I've never used anyone over there.

If you're not adverse to a little travel, I'd highly recommend:

Tim Moye transmissions in Lutz.

http://www.timmoyetransmissions.com/

I've used him myself and he's top flight!

Takes pride in his work, stands behind it, goes all out, is reasonably priced and the shop has been in the family for years.

He's been into high performance and 4x4's for years and years and really knows his stuff.

Another possibility is:

Shakesperes automotive, which used to be in Clearwater, has as I understandit, relocated to Linebaugh Ave. in Tampa (near the Citrus Park mall).

Mark has been wrenching on vettes for years and seems to know his stuff as well.
Did a lot of work on my 87 and on many peoples vettes.

My 1st choice however, would still and always be Tim Moyes:thumbsup:

When/if I'm ever in need of another rebuild, that's where I'm going:thumbsup:

Thanks. I'm not adverse to traveling a bit if it's worth it. I may hunt down a used transmission first, then I'll have one I can just drop off somewhere when I decide to get mine rebuilt.

Give me a call if you want more info. I'll tell you what he did with my landcruiser trans., and those are a major PITA to work on!:thumbsup:

Well, it looks like i've got more life left in the ole girl than I thought. I decided to go ahead and spend the money to change the filter and dump some new synthetic fluid into her...and she's shifting like her old self again! I can't believe she's still going

Drain out 12 oz's of fluid and add a bottle of Lucas Trans additive. It has no downside, and works wonders.

Larrys Garage in Dover built my 700r4 that's behind my LS1. He has done a few other transmissions for me as well. Only trans shop I'll deal with. Sounds like you have it going now but if you get to a spot where you need to redo it let me know and I'll transport it for you to save you the R&R of a shop.

Very cool. I appreciate the offer. Hopefully I'll get another couple of years out of her. I only drive a few thousand miles a year with the truck...if that.

And just to add some pics to the thread, here's what she looks like. Gotta squeeze in an el cheapo paint job soon to get her in just one color.
