This really sucks!!!! I just got home from my first ever near stranding with the 'vette.

Let me start from the beginning and you folks can help me. First thing, I pulled over to get my wife from work. She puts her things in the hatch and gets in the car. Next thing you know, my shifter (auto) slides back very easily. My car doesn't roll forward. I thought it seemed unusual. I put it back in park and shut off the car, took out the key, closed the door and waited the 10 seconds. Then I reopened the door, and started the car.

Car would not get out of park. The shifter would slide up and down once out of the park position. I remember this problem with my Trans Am so I had to act quick because I was somewhat blocking traffic. So I popped the clip off of the knob to push in the pin deeper by hand. To my surprise, unlike the Trans Am (which it would happen to when the pin would warp) this pin is not plastic but metal. As much as I tried and tried it would continue to do so over and over and over. No way to take the console apart now ( so please forgive me guys) I grabbed my knife and cut the shifter boot along both sides of the stitchings.:nonod: Yes, I did shed a couple of tears while gentley doing this.

Once I got the boot opened I took my pliers and popped off the ziptie to get full access. Know I got both hands in there with a flathead playing around with the different slides (dammit it's a lot deeper in there then the Trans Am). Now, I'm not sure cause a)it was dark and b) I was so pissed, if I struck the right notch with the flathead or if eventually it popped back in on it's own, but finally the shifter engaged with the tranny and it slipped in reverse. I figured if it slipped into reverse, it can drive and so it did. I did not stop until I got home.

Needless to say, I very pissed off because of my shifter boot now being two halves (thank God and grandma{RIP} I am great with a needle and thread)!
If I had a garage I'd be in it now working on it but since I don't I'm here awaiting daylight. I need some help here guys. Has this happened to anyone before? Is this just a freak occurence or is there something I need to replace before all hell breaks loose the next time? I mean, since I got the shifter boot apart, before sewing it back together I want to know.

Was it just me taking for granted the shifter knob and knocking it out of place, or is something wearing and I should order and replace the part ASAP? It's shifting back and forth now and I was slow and gentle with it but still. Any suggestions?:shrug01:

What year is it??I'll pull it up in my new GM Factory Service Manuel!!:dancer01:

10-4 good buddy!!!!
Well,I found it,you probly have a bad park lock cable!!:shrug01:I've got to figure out how to save this in a file and Email it to you!! I don't think I have enough space to post it,I'm going to send you everything it has on the shifter!!

Stand by!!

No. But if you printed it out and you have a scanner why don't you scan it then email it.
Yeah,I had to print it out!! I will,it's going to be about 30 pages!!:lmao:It's everything it has on the shifter!!Do you know how to get the console out,If not I'll send that too!!:rofl1::D

Might as well send that too. I'm going to need to get it off so that I can so up the shifter boot anyway. I will PM you my email address.

Hey Junk, if you need to just fax it to me. I have a scanner and I'll scan it and e-mail it to him.

Sending you my fax number now just in case.

Jack up the rear with a floor jack under the rear cradle, get it plenty high & of course use jack stands!

Crawl under fom the drivers side and with a flashlight look up on the side of the tranny where you will see a black plastic piece about the size of a wallet. The shifter cable ends in a plastich connector and snaps onto the lever. It is not unheard of for the connector to snap or slip off due to wear (it is just a socket type snap on to a ball on the lever). That mat be the issue, the other thing to look at is if the nut holding the lever on may have backed off so the lever is slipping on the shaft and only partialy catching to move the selector.

The shifter side would be the last place to look as I have yet to see a failure on that end, but it is possible.

Good Luck!

So other then the obvious difficulties getting the car up high enough, would you say it's fairly easy to see? A pix would be fantastic right now!

Cable

It sounds like a broken shift cable to me.This is a simple fix if you have a lift to get the car on.The exhaust has to be dropped from the manifolds back and the torque tube tunnel cover plate has to be removed. The cable only connects in two places at the transmission and the shifter. There are two clips that hold it in place one in the tunnel and one on the transmission.Fell free to give me a call @ 850-559-9604 if I can help in any way.

Sounds like a pain in the a$s to me.....a guy with no garage, no lift and one arm to work with. I don't know if it would be as bad in my car since I have headers and an x-pipe. There is actual wiggle room in there.

I stitched the boot back up today. Not my finest work but damn good. Today it's been shifting in between the gears ok. I've just been careful that's all. Shifting nice and slow.

Thanks. I'm just going to have to take my chances with it.

Like I said, today it's been behaving. I've been careful with it, not sliding through the gears, gentley changing gears, etc.
If it happens again, I'm just going to have to eat the s#!t sandwich and get my mechanic to fix it. Hopefully it won't cost me the other arm!
