This really sucks!!!! I just got home from my first ever near stranding with the 'vette.
Let me start from the beginning and you folks can help me. First thing, I pulled over to get my wife from work. She puts her things in the hatch and gets in the car. Next thing you know, my shifter (auto) slides back very easily. My car doesn't roll forward. I thought it seemed unusual. I put it back in park and shut off the car, took out the key, closed the door and waited the 10 seconds. Then I reopened the door, and started the car.
Car would not get out of park. The shifter would slide up and down once out of the park position. I remember this problem with my Trans Am so I had to act quick because I was somewhat blocking traffic. So I popped the clip off of the knob to push in the pin deeper by hand. To my surprise, unlike the Trans Am (which it would happen to when the pin would warp) this pin is not plastic but metal. As much as I tried and tried it would continue to do so over and over and over. No way to take the console apart now ( so please forgive me guys) I grabbed my knife and cut the shifter boot along both sides of the stitchings.:nonod: Yes, I did shed a couple of tears while gentley doing this.
Once I got the boot opened I took my pliers and popped off the ziptie to get full access. Know I got both hands in there with a flathead playing around with the different slides (dammit it's a lot deeper in there then the Trans Am). Now, I'm not sure cause a)it was dark and b) I was so pissed, if I struck the right notch with the flathead or if eventually it popped back in on it's own, but finally the shifter engaged with the tranny and it slipped in reverse. I figured if it slipped into reverse, it can drive and so it did. I did not stop until I got home.
Needless to say, I very pissed off because of my shifter boot now being two halves (thank God and grandma{RIP} I am great with a needle and thread)!
If I had a garage I'd be in it now working on it but since I don't I'm here awaiting daylight. I need some help here guys. Has this happened to anyone before? Is this just a freak occurence or is there something I need to replace before all hell breaks loose the next time? I mean, since I got the shifter boot apart, before sewing it back together I want to know.
Was it just me taking for granted the shifter knob and knocking it out of place, or is something wearing and I should order and replace the part ASAP? It's shifting back and forth now and I was slow and gentle with it but still. Any suggestions?:shrug01:
