Carb rebuild

Can anyone recommend a quality shop that can rebuild my Carter Q-jet (yes I said Carter Q-jet) for my 72 BB.

I'd like it done is a reasonable time and at a reasonable price.

Or should I just do it myself. I figure after 35 years it deserves it.

I say do it yourself. Those Carter "Quadra-Jet" carbs were made to be rebuildable by the home mechanic.

I do have a second option... I have a nice Holley 650DP that would be a great upgrade.

you can probably have it dyno'd also.

So hows all, still laid up off and on with procedures from accident. Hope to get out for cox chevy show.

Hey Ken, all is fine. I think I'm going to do the rebuild myself. Hope your making progress and hope to see you at the Cox show.

Your the man:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:Call me if you need help, you know the number 1-800-backyard mechanic:lmao:

Just use caution when you remove the top....springs and ball bearings can fly out of there and you'll wonder where they came from!

OK, I chickened out. I found that a tech with Bobby Watts (anybody remember his racing days?) Speed Shop in Lakeland had a dude named Jerry who was considered a very good rebuilder. I called and talked to Jerry and on this past Monday I took him the Q-jet. Took him just two days and a total cost of $105 (and he knew the carb was from a classic vette) for him to rebuild the carb. What he found was that some dumb a** had stripped the threads on the needle jet in the float chamber and had JB Welded it in place. He repaired that with a Heli Coil and that the secondary's could not open because of build up/corrosion on the shaft. He polished that and I brought it home and re-installed in on Goldie. Had time to take it on a very short jaunt down the road. OMG I think I just gained a hundred horses (either that or someone put RichZ's motor in my C3 when no one was looking).

DAMN! does that girl run and no break up when I grab a gear.

Bottom line is I would recommend Jerry to anyone with a carb car, anywhere, anytime. Jerry is in his (my guess) later 60's and is awesome. I suspect he's been doing this since Bobby's racing days.

I just thought a job well done was worthy of praise.:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

:dancer01::dancer01::thumbsup:That is awesome news, can't wait to hear run,I told you that you would fell the torqe in your seat.:thumbsup:Great price too.

Way to go Ken. I thought it was the carb. Man you can't beat that price. Was that you I saw(just a blur) yesterday?

Glad that worked out well for you! A lot of folks prefer a Holley carb, and I personally think they're easier to work on, but a good Q-Jet is hard to beat.

Thanks guys, turned out very well. I wanted to stay with the original carb so choose to have the Q-jet redone.

Ya Joe I was scared.

Fred, no it wasn't me that time. Have only had her one short jaunt so far but she goes to Punta Gorda Sunday. Outta give me good prolonged feed back.

Again, thanks guys.

Ken

Well it's good that you had a pro do it for ya with all the crap that was wrong with it. I'll bet that big block breathes like a Dragon now. Try to keep it under 100..!

Ken......sounds like your gasoline bill is gonna go up!

But let me tell you I have really pizzed off a dude on another national forum cause I sent him an e-mail about the need for a rebuild and he didn't respond. Oh well "Breath in, breath out, move on"

Not to hi-jack your thread and I was thinking about putting this in the Rant area
When I first got my Vette I was looking for a shop somewhat close and that had an online presence. I found one and sent them 4 emails with no returns so I moved on and found another :nonod:
I wanted an item made by a certain company in Canada, I sent an email and the owner replied on a Sat & Sun. I made the order gave them my CC and now they haven't answered an email in some 4 weeks :toetap05:
If a company won't respond why give out an email address.
There's been some other instances, but I've taken your thread long enough
