Can anyone recommend a quality shop that can rebuild my Carter Q-jet (yes I said Carter Q-jet) for my 72 BB.
I'd like it done is a reasonable time and at a reasonable price.
Or should I just do it myself. I figure after 35 years it deserves it.
ken, i spoke with the crew at anti venom at brandon car show last fall. they will do rebuilds on carbs.
Just use caution when you remove the top....springs and ball bearings can fly out of there and you'll wonder where they came from!
OK, I chickened out. I found that a tech with Bobby Watts (anybody remember his racing days?) Speed Shop in Lakeland had a dude named Jerry who was considered a very good rebuilder. I called and talked to Jerry and on this past Monday I took him the Q-jet. Took him just two days and a total cost of $105 (and he knew the carb was from a classic vette) for him to rebuild the carb. What he found was that some dumb a** had stripped the threads on the needle jet in the float chamber and had JB Welded it in place. He repaired that with a Heli Coil and that the secondary's could not open because of build up/corrosion on the shaft. He polished that and I brought it home and re-installed in on Goldie. Had time to take it on a very short jaunt down the road. OMG I think I just gained a hundred horses (either that or someone put RichZ's motor in my C3 when no one was looking).
DAMN! does that girl run and no break up when I grab a gear.
Bottom line is I would recommend Jerry to anyone with a carb car, anywhere, anytime. Jerry is in his (my guess) later 60's and is awesome. I suspect he's been doing this since Bobby's racing days.
I just thought a job well done was worthy of praise.:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Well it's good that you had a pro do it for ya with all the crap that was wrong with it. I'll bet that big block breathes like a Dragon now. Try to keep it under 100..!
Ken......sounds like your gasoline bill is gonna go up!
