Drag Racers

Not yet:nonod:
I'm currently working on one, "Fast & Furious, My Wild & Wooly Past" . I am going to chronicle all my racing which started with the Soap Box Derby, onto 1/4 midgets, hydroplanes (10hp merc class) motorcycle motocross etc etc. I'm still putting all the pictures I can find on the computer. I have to search for a lot of them because a lot were "mysteriously lost" during a divorce:mad: It's amazing how many pics I have found on some of the strangest web sites:confused:

It doesn't have to be complete Larry. These sites are a work in progress.

Yes on the Saker, Yes on the Spice and

I think only 5 cars had a faster lap than you guys. Check this out:

Was this the car you and your brother designed? Beautiful machinery! Do you still own Spice -013?

Spice is at my brother's perofrmance shop up in Tenn area.
Intrepid #5 in proto type form is at his shop as well. I'm sure everyone here has herd of RPM Motorsports. That's brother Chris. Also well known as the ESPN's Mad Teacher / Professor of High Performance at NADC College of high performance and DRAG RACE HIGH epesode.
Anyway, Spice was in DIRE need of total resto. Suspension half shafts
up-wright's, and axel stubs when X rayed showed some serious stress cracking. Hewland was due for some overhaul as well.
I'll dig some pic's up of the Saker we built and post.

saker pics racing the 25 hours of Thunderhill

This fella's is a contract to Build race car.
Clean sheet of paper, total build from thin air to the race track. Everything you see of this car was hand built by myself and brother Chris.

Well my friend, back in 1965 racing head set's were not quite known of.
In my case, there were 3 light's on the roof to let the pit crew know that the car was coming in the pits for gas, tires, repairs . Red , Amber, and Green.

This Corvette by the way sold a few years back at Barrett Jackson auction
for 800K to Sachs. Since then Larry Sachs the present owner has done a beautiful ground up resto, most likely another 200K, and the car currently has a NCRS value at 1.4 mill.
My brother and I sold it for 75K back in 1988:banghead:.

Ah, I see! I was just a young kid then begging my dad to take me to any kind of races.

Post a link when you get the site up. I know how the divorce/disappearing pics thing works all too well. Since you were a 1/4 Midget guy here's the only pic of me in mine I have found.

Thanks for your kind words, it was a job,and a wonderful job. But the engineer's I grew up with were the real hero's of Corvette, and racing.
With the technology out there now days compared to my dinosour days, shoot I 'm very humbled.
In all honesty, every 24 hours of LeMans, and todays GM Corvette team headed by Doug Fehan...how I wish Zora had lived just a little bit longer.
Racing rather road racing or drag racing, Indy car, or Nascar.........he'd loved every second, and was totally approachable by anyone. He just wanted to hear what his Corvette owner's had to say, good or bad. And why even his home telephone number was listed for anyone to call 24/7. This is the truth.:wavey:

thanks to you too.

Kinda fun being requested to dig through my old pile of pictures and share a story or two.
When you get as old as me, tha's about all that's left so it seems.

How are you anyway? Man it doesn't get more difficult except getting down isn't nearly as tough as getting back up is the real killer.
So what new? and have you got a ride yet (corvette)? I have come across a real nice ride.
Comp Yellow, 2 top 1991 ZR1 w/ 52K miles, for 13K$. real sharp, all Documentaion incld. orginal window sticker.

Not trying to jump into your conversation but Shadow has been awfully quiet lately. That is a great deal on the ZR1. Sure would like to see Shadow in that car. Or maybe you?

I have revised my schedule on my website and maybe we could meet at one of the tracks? Or anywhere for that matter. Good to see I'm not the only one with problems getting up.

Blackwing

Hey Spice I just looked at your profile again and noticed you have a Blackwing. Me too. I decided to do a little testing last week at Bradenton because I read all of this hype about Vararam and I never knew if the Blackwing was doing any good or not.

I switched to the factory airbox and adjusted my fuel trims to match. In the eighth mile I lost .08 and 2 MPH. Needless to say the Blackwing is back on. When I put it on a few years ago I also cut an opening in the shroud to match the filter. I have also enclosed it in a fiberglass housing to prevent any engine air of getting in there.

Needless to say, just follow the old man, he doesn't put bad things on his toy's. LOL
One thing Zora taught all of us years ago. If it doesn't have a positive funtion to the car, then it doesn't belong on the car.

Very Cool !!!!! :yesnod::thumbsup:
I feel very fortunate having grown up in the 50's/60's with a gearhead for a father:)
I'm sure glad this thread started. We all need to somehow get together for the ultimate bench racing experience !!!

He's right. That's why I wanted to see for myself. I would have left the stock box on there if I didn't see a difference. Not much of a test I'll admit but it was enough to satisfy my curiosity.

My Dad wasn't a gear head and never understood me. :shrug01: But he was the greatest Dad a guy could ever have.

I'm like you Larry and I'm so glad I was around drag racing in the '60s. Got to see all the guys that made this sport. Match races were the norm and they came in on open trailers and were just one of the boys.
