Kumho tires

JimJL

Viet Nam Vet
been on a new set of Kumho tires for a few days now, what a difference compared to the stock Goodyears, so much smoother and quieter and they cost less then $800 for the set of 4 from Tirerack, highly reccomend the tires and Tirerack . these are runflats also.

I have seen those from Tirerack also. Much much cheaper.

I don't think my vette has runflats and I too am skiddish about road trips without them. I have Bridgestones Potenza SO-3s on mine. I need to replace one of them because it's nearly worn out. I'm glad you mentioned the Kumhos because I saw their price and was like, wow! Here is another question.

I don't have TPS on my tires and it says that runflats require the use of TPS. Is this true? And the opposite is also my question. Can you use the TPS with regular tires?

the TPS system helps you know when you have low or 0 pressure in your tires has the stiff sidewalls don't indicate this on runflats so I'm told. I don't see why you couldn't use the TPS on regular tires.

Yes, you can use the TPS with regular tires. The reason GM did not include the TPS on the C5 Z06, which has normal tires, is that the "spare" on a Z06 is a tire inflator and a can of fix-a-flat. Fix-a-flat and similar products will ruin a TPS. Personally, I wouldn't let that stop me if I was stuck. A new TPS is $35-50. I'd rather pay that than a tow and possible damage from towing.

$500 for that can of Fix-a-flat and air compressor from GM! I think they also did it since they were trying to sacrifice any weight they could on the Z06. Don't know how much the TPS system weighs.

They may be cheaper and quieter than GY's but how do they stack up in quality. Can you run them flat for 100miles @ 50MPH like the Goodyear's. If so they are a good deal. If not then you are getting what you pay for.

I heard where independent tests indicate that no one is close to GY as far as the quality/dependability of those tires. Dont get me wrong, I hate them with a passion but until something better comes along, I will stick with GY.

what I liked about the Tirerack site is all the reviews and comparisons of the different brands of tires from users of cars like ours and others, worth checking out when your considering spending $1000 or more, I've always liked GY tires but I went a different direction this time with no regrets so far. :wavey:

A while back I posted about dumping my stock GY run flats and put a set of non run flat GY GS D3s on my '01 vert. I did this for a couple of reasons. I had about 10k miles on my run flats, but I also had run a few autocrosses with them. After that type of use, I just could not stand the howling noise that they made. So, I decided to get rid of them. I did a lot of looking, especially on the Tire Rack site. I wanted a tire that performed better, was quieter, and gave a better ride. These pararmeters pointed me to the GS D3s. But I was not sure whether I wanted to give up the run flat technology.

After talking with a number of people that have made this change, I was leaning toward the non run flats. I had a conversation with my Vette mechanic here in Maryland and he did not think the non run flat tires would be a problem for me. He pointed out to me that my pressure sensors give me a warning when the tire pressure hits around 25 pounds. That should be more than sufficient time to get the car pulled over. He also recommended that I also purchased a kit from Tire Rack that is a compressor with an integrated tire sealant. This tire sealant is supposed to be compatible with the pressure sensors. With the proper use of the compressor and the tire sealant, you should be able to get the car to a place to have the tire repaired. He also reminded me that this would be putting a system on my vert that is similar to the system that the factory provides for the Z06s.

So, that is why I abandoned the run flats. I get a more aggressive handling tire in both the dry and the wet, plus our '01 Vert is a much more comfortable cruising car now! Plus the compressor is a handy item in the trunk. Just my opinion!

Good luck with your Kumhos!

I have Bridgestone Pontenzas SO-3s on mine. They came with the car when I bought them.

The car has Z06 rims on it, hence not TPS and regular tires. My car is almost a daily driver. I mean I do drive it 3-5 days a week and sometimes for far trips since my job requires it. I gotta replace one of those back tires cause it looks near bald. Before I spend the big bucks on a tire(s) I want to consider all options; whether I should go back to runflats or stick to regular tires. I guess if your regular tires are expensive enough, you'll never have a blow out.

This is a really nice emergency tire inflator kit that includes fix a flat that does not ruin your sensors when used $79 it is on my wish list for X-mas.

Naples,

That is the exact kit that I purchased from Tire Rack. It really is a neat setup! Again, just my opinion.

I was planning on putting that on my Christmas wishlist as well if I decided to stick to regular tires. Sounds to me like TPS with regular tires and the compressor w/slyme is your friend. What kinda tires are you guys using that aren't runflats?

I love the look of my Bridgestones but they don't last worth a damn. I think they are rated at about 10,000 miles. I want something that's gonna at least give me 25,000. I think even General tires are rated for more then the Bridgestones and the General tires are dirt cheap in comparrison.
