Last Shuttle launch at night

Would love to, but gotta go to work in the morning. With that damn traffic, I'd never make it back. :P Wish I could take the day off, but I'm slammed this week. Hope she launches, but if it's half as winding there as it is here, I'm willing to bet it's postponed yet again.

We just got home and I read they just fueled it again. I set the alarm for 4:00 so we'll see what happens.

We were able to watch the launch from our backyard. Not a cloud in the sky and it went up without a hitch. I think we're about 30 miles from the launch pad as the crow fly's. The first thing we saw was the night sky light up at ignition. Seems like it took about 30 seconds for the shuttle to become visible and then about 2 minutes later we could hear the sound.

Because of my engineering background and some knowledge of the systems on board I realize how dangerous these flights really are. It just amazes me when they launch without a problem. As much as I hate to see the shuttle program end I think it's long overdue.

Yeah, I find it pretty amazing they've only had two major accidents. Pretty crazy to think we'll be going back to capsule rocket launches, but with the cost of bringing the shuttle from CA to FL being almost $1 Billion, it just seems to make a lot of sense...among probably a ton of other reasons, but that alone makes it worth it. Has been a great run for the Shuttle program.
