loose mirror head

Have run into a small annoyance with outside mirror heads becoming loose. The base is solidly tight but the heads slowly loosen up untill I'm looking an the road.:ack2:

If anyone has run into this before is their an inovative way to correct the situation?:shrug01:

I am now on my 2nd R side mirror and am getting ready to order my 2nd driver's side mirror.:nonod:

Man,This is a problem with Early Shark mirrors!! I had a Ton of them this way!! There is really not any good way to fix them unless the glass is out of the mirror,And if the glass hasn't been replaced you will break it trying to get it out!! I have kind of knurled the ball that it pivots on with a sharp punch,but that can break the glass and it will loosen back up in a few months if you drive it allot!!:thumbsup:
 
Hey Ken,

I have the same problem with my '69, what a PITA!. As junkie mentioned, you are going to break the mirror if you really want to try to adjust it, and since I have a dated mirror in mine, I just could not bring myself to try this approach.

Here is what I do, and by all means this is not a permanent solution. I take a drop or two of blue Loctite and while it is still wet I move the mirror around to coat the ball with the Loctite. Then I set the mirror in my preferred position and then let it setup. It should last for a few months, but you might have to repeat the process. The more you adjust the mirror after it has setup the sooner you will redo the process. Be careful not to use too much or it will run down the back of your mirror. In this case less is more.

As I said, this is a temporary fix that takes two minutes to do and I don't mind repeating the process instead of replacing a dated mirror.

Rich and Junkie, thanks for the insight. My mirrors are not dated and both have apparently been replaced already prior to my ownership.

I think I'll go ahead and get a new one on order and Loctite this one till the new one arrives.

Yeah.... Between using duct tape and JB Weld, there's not much you can't fix....
 
:thumbsup:Gosh it sure looks funny with that duct tape painted War Bonnet Yellow with loctite and super glue attached trailing in the wind as I watch the white stripe on the side of the road, but it is unique.

I'm not sure of judging points based on originality but who knows?
