Money, money and more money

Bob K

Deceased
A short while ago I got the following email from our great senator, Bill Nelson. I wrote him and suggested that maybe Congress should shut off the funds and then none of the states will be able to take it. I also asked him why bother spending money to create phony jobs when all they have to do is give it to the unemployed. They still don't have a clue!

If you want to give him your opinion go here:

"A bipartisan group of the state's political and business leaders have pursued high-speed rail in Florida for decades, because it means more than $2.4 billion in economic aid, thousands of construction jobs and a modern transportation link between several of the state’s largest cities. That’s why I support it. I’m joined by state lawmakers and many members of Florida's congressional delegation, who also question the governor’s decision to kill high-speed rail. One is U.S. Rep. John Mica, the Winter Park Republican who chairs the House Transportation Committee. Also, federal transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, a Republican, has expressed disappointment. If Florida doesn’t take the money, another state will. So, some of us will look for ways to save the rail project. Meantime, please don’t hesitate to pass along your thoughts."

The only way a government can create jobs that are any real benefit to the country is if they foster an environment that is conducive to private industry creating those jobs to generate true overall wealth for the country. That means reducing burdensome taxation and regulations that crush all inventive from private industry to be, well, "industrious". Allow businesses to expand or spring anew to truly create jobs that provide not only more gross national product, but also expand the tax base by providing more sources of income, rather that trying to squeeze more and more from the contracting tax base that is still left in this country. I think everyone sees the folly of government agencies at all levels acting like they MUST have a fixed income from their tax subjects, and when that base gets reduced, they MUST come up with new ways to extract that same amount of money from a smaller pool of wallets available. Obviously this will result in complete collapse of the entire system as the pool continues to get smaller because the additional drain caused by those new and novel taxes drive more and more people out of the work force and therefore no longer producing taxable income. The more people and businesses are taxed, the less incentive there is for them to continue working to produce less and less retained income for their labors.

As for government created jobs, well those jobs "created" directly by government and paid for by tax money collected from the citizenry are nothing more that just another forum of redistribution of wealth. That doesn't create any new wealth at all. In effect, it is a zero-sum gain in that some money has to be taken from someone in order to pay someone else the wages for that job that was "created". Basically nothing more than "busy work" that just shuffles money around from one hand to another.

With the present economic climate, this is nothing more that just an emergency rearranging of the deck chairs on the Titanic, which tries to distract the passengers from what is really going on.

I just got the following reply to the email I sent to Nelson. Obviously they just don't understand plain English. This guy is an elected Senator from Florida. The rest of the country must have a low opinion of Florida voters.

"Thank you for contacting me regarding the planned high speed rail line in Florida.

I was disappointed in Governor Scott's decision to reject over $2 billion in Federal aid to help make this project a reality. This money represented nearly the entire cost to build the initial segment, between Orlando and Tampa.

A bipartisan group of the state's political and business leaders have pursued high-speed rail in Florida for decades, because it means thousands of construction jobs and a modern transportation link between several of the state’s largest cities. That’s why I support it. I’m joined by state lawmakers and many members of Florida's congressional delegation, who also question the governor’s decision to kill high-speed rail. One is U.S. Rep. John Mica, who chairs the House Transportation Committee. Also, Federal transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has expressed disappointment.

I am working with my colleagues both in Washington and Florida to find a way to make this rail line a reality, and to make Florida a better place to live, visit, and do business. Please do not hesitate to contact me in the future.

Sincerely,
Senator Bill Nelson"

Look how well Amtrak has done since its inception. :ack2:

It's lost $$$$ every year since 1976.

The govt. "track record" (pun intended) SUCKS! :ack2:

Nelson is a pencil-neck wimp who votes nothing but party line (Dem) 99% of the time...henceforth, you should expect nothing better than the reply you received. My greatest hope is that the electorate will have the insight (as well as the ball$) to dethrone him as well as Bobama and his other fellow travelers in the next election:banghead:

I wrote that dumb a$$ about the health care bill and got the same disconnected out of touch response. His brain must have been sucked out in the vacuum of space. As I sit here in my G Bush T shirt that says miss me yet! over.

Any "representative" that votes the party line and not their constituent line needs to be out of a job next election.

They should have had the insight in 2008 and my fear is the Obuma will just keep on charming his base in 2012. I think he'll lose a very close election. If McCain had fought he may have won so if we get another person that just lays down it will be close.

The Republicans have a knack for putting up the worst possible choices to run for president, so I sincerely doubt they will do any better this time. They blew it when they put Dole in the ring, and then again with McCain. Likely the only reason Bush got into office was because his old man was pulling strings.

Seriously, all the Republican need to do is to put someone in the running that isn't a two-faced lying SOB, and that seems to be impossible for them to accomplish. So yes, Obumba probably will win the 2012 election. Especially if the democrats throw another spoiler into the race like they did with Ross Perot in '92 to put Clinton into office.

I was just looking up some details, and I found this site -> http://www.sos.state.tx.us/elections/historical/presidential.shtml

Scroll down to the bottom and check out the results for the 2008 presidential election.

John McCain - 4,479,328 votes
Barack Obama - 3,528,633 votes

Obama lost the popular election by nearly a million votes! That was nearly a landslide AGAINST Obama! Seriously, what is wrong with THAT picture?

That was COLD

Nope...was not here when either Challenger, or Columbia, "blew up".

I hired on to the federal government right after Columbia in order to 'prevent' such incidents from ever happening again. I WILL NOT lose a Shuttle on my watch!

I've been on design teams for the shuttles and everyone past and present has done a terrific job. People that post otherwise just don't have a clue how complicated they are and that all accidents are not preventable.

There's a constant learning curve and a complete circle will never be formed. Had we known back then what we know now those accidents wouldn't have happened. If we keep flying there is no doubt there will be another one.

I also thought it was a cold remark and one you didn't deserve.

I heard somewhere that even with a 99.5 percent reliability rate on the parts, there would STILL be 25 or 30 THOUSAND parts that could fail! With that many potential problem parts, I happen to think that NASA is doing a superb job!
