General Motors has announced that future models from its Chevrolet label will be developed as world cars, meaning the entire lineup will be available in right-hand drive for the first time. GM will also make its global technical centers responsible for the development of specific platforms and models, which can then be manufactured in plants all over the world. Similar to what Toyota does with its Camry model.

The last Chevrolet models to be strictly left-hand drive will be the current Corvette and recently revealed HHR mini-MPV. Right-hand drive markets such as the UK, Japan and Australia will one day receive highly desired models including the next-generation Corvette and upcoming Camaro.

However, the first cars to feature under the new design structure will be the replacements for the Kalos and Lacetti models. These will be developed in Korea, which has responsibility for GM’s C platform that will also form the basis of the next generation Vauxhall Astra.
