NOT CHARGING

Rocky

Wellington 89 Vette
My 89 Vette, charging system is not charging the battery. I have a new alternator and battery. The parts store thinks my starter is bad. Sometimes the car is "dead" when I turn on the key, then after turning the key on and off a few times the motor turns over. The starter is draining the battery .4amps, even while not running.

I ran an extra ground wire from the battery to the frame, and it didn't help.

Any thoughts,

Thanks,

Rocky

I had a corroded/loose battery connection on the starter a while back on my C5Z that caused all kinds of odd problems until the connection was found to be at fault. How much is a starter? Probably getting kind of long in the tooth anyway, so replacing it wouldn't be a bad idea. Unless you have headers or something else making replacing it a pain in the butt, of course.

Quite often we see just that....the starter solinoide will crack or corode and cause a draw. My bet is the starter also.

Good Luck!

Thanks to you both. I don't know how old the starter is, and the cost isn't much to replace it. I have a new starter ordered and will install it this weekend.

I let you both know how everything worked out.

I replaced the starter, and replacing it didn't fix the problem, although I believe that the starter was going bad.

I ran a wire from the alternator directly to the battery and the car is charging. Either the wire from the battery to the alternator is bad, or I think I have a bad connection at the terminal (behind the battery) block.

I had to watch both football games today, so the Vette will have to wait until Tuesday.

There should be a fusible link in the wire from the alternator,it should be around the positive cable end,my guess it's blown!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I couldn't locate any fuse in the cable/wire. I removed the battery and took apart the terminal block wiring behind the battery. Before removing, I wiggled the wiring and saw the wiring was loose. I removed, clean up and replaced the stud. Once completed, the car is now charging correctly.

Thanks for all the comments.
