Was driving home from the beach today and heard a very loud "whooosh", I looked in my rearview mirror and noticed my glass top sliding down the road! :lmao:

Anyways, now I have a great reason to buy a factory fresh replacement, here's a few pics, I don't think it will buff out, it's busted up pretty bad. I was traveling approximately 55 mph. A local LEO was behind me, hit his blue lights and policed up the top and helped me replace it - he felt my pain...fortunally...it didn't hit anyone!

Wish me luck on finding a replacement (I'm also going to pick up a solid top) when I pick up my new glass one...in case I do it again!:lmao:

Damn brother that's painful.:ack2: I feel your hurt.:ack2: Jeeze. What (on earth) allowed that to happen?:shrug01:

I'm curious if my insurance will pick up the tab for this? I plan on getting a glass top and a solid top. If I can pursuade my insurance carrier to replace the glass top, I'll just be out of pocket for the solid top?

Also, I found a place in Mississippi that sells replacements for 500.00, not all that bad considering GM charges 950+ .....

Anyways, to answer someone's question: I forgot to snap the two handles and while driving, wind got underneath the top and "whoooosh" off it flew like a kite.

I'm wondering about my insurance - if they will pay for the glass? Can't wait till they open in the morning!

I don't know if your insurance will cover it or not, but there is a company on the east coast of Florida that makes replacements. Astro tops. I've seen them advertise on Ebay. I think they sell for around $500.00 too. Not sure on the quality, but they've been selling on Ebay since 1999 and they have a 98.9 rating.

I would be surprised if insurance covers it. Not unless you make up a plausible story about something that they SHOULD cover.... :shrug01:

:ack2:Man that sucks,Just glad no one got hurt, could have turn into a nightmare if the top hit someone else.:eek:Hope it all works out, just be glad is not the rainy season:lmao::lmao::lmao:

Sorry to hear about joining the wrong FRC club. It certainly looks like it took it like a champ. Not too bad for 55mph and no telling how high it must of flown before hitting the ground.

I've only heard bad things about astro tops, mainly from C4's, but bad things none the less. I've heard GM is the only way to go for a glass top. I'd certainly check into insurance for that...they "should" cover it, minus your deductable that is. Either way, I'd try to locate a GM unit, wether it be new or used.

:nonod: You're right, I don't think that will buff out.
Glad it didn't hit another car... Not sure about the insurance but you'll find that out when you talk to them.

WOW, im a F.R.C member also. I have an 06 and it happened about 7 months after owning the car. Happened while getting on I95 ramp going about 60 mph. Not much warning, all of a sudden I hear wind (had my windows up) quickly turned the radio off to find out what was going on and WOOOOOSH there goes the roof ! The car behind me swerved and guess what it was a C5! I quickly stopped and ran back picking up the panel. I headed straight back to the dealership, I say straight back because I just left it 2 minutes eariler from getting an oil change! The gave me a free rental and in 5 days had my car back with a new "SMC" PROPERLY FOAMED roof! Yeaaaaa!

I know Eric (Clockwork C5) belongs to this club also:lmao:

Other than that ost of the roof around here are fixed..lol

here here, that was a painful reminder. luckily i was just in the parking lot and was able to get it fixed. cost around $500. id definitely try and find a used top and not try to repair it. however in my case, my c5 is my daily driver and i needed a top pretty much immediately

I think you both may be talking about the same place. Astro Tops is in Alabama. If you buy from here I think you may need a good core (Frame) or the price goes up.
My top was delaminating and I kept looking and found one like new on CF. The seller was from Punta Gorda. I sold my old one to Astro Tops.

Somehow that adds new meaning.......

:lmao: LOL. Yeah, there have a few times where I thought about just laying the top on so I could just pull it off and take off later, but after hearding stories like this a couple of years ago, I NEVER do it. When the top goes back on the car, I take the time to lock it down. Of course it's a bit harder on a C4, but it's worth the effort. :banghead:
