Report: Chevrolet considering twin-turbo V6 for next Corvette

Fans of classic Americana, here's yet another anniversary to keep in the back of your mind: 2013 marks the 60th anniversary of the Chevrolet Corvette. And, while we don't have to tell true Corvette aficionados this, here's another interesting little nugget of knowledge: the original version of Chevy's iconic sportscar came equipped with a six cylinder engine.

Where are we going with all of this? According to Autoweek, there is a distinct possibility that a downsized six cylinder engine will be offered in the next generation (C7, for those keeping track) of the Chevrolet Corvette, and there's an apparent push to try and get the car out the door in time to celebrate the car's 60th anniversary.

Yes, we know a downsized engine for the Corvette isn't exactly the newest rumor 'round the block – we've been hearing whisperings about the C7 'Vette since before the C6 model went public – but with the recent revelation that Saab had been working on a transmission for a twin-turbo V6-powered Corvette, it's worth sharing once again.

Corvette, even with a 900hp V6 = FAIL!

You're kidding, right?

I could live with 700 HP and 40 MPG V6.

Amen brother!

With fuel prices not getting any lower, if I could get my hands on a 700 hp vette with 30+ mpg, I'd snatch it up in a second:thumbsup:

It's the bottom line that counts.

If I can look in the rear view and see someone's big V8 engined whatever in full view, it won't matter to me what engine is under the hood:D:thumbsup:
I still win:rofl1:

And if I can pass more than a couple of pumps in the process, then it's a win-win:thumbsup:

You're kidding, right?

Nope, if I wanted a mid-engined v6, I'd get an Acura NSX. Actually, I do love those cars, but I still love the roar of my V8. I think GM should easily be able to make a V8 with tons of power and still get way more than 30MPG. Heck, most Six-Speed vettes have gotten 30+mpg since they introduced it in 1989...if you keep your foot out of it. But then whats the point? I think they'll hone the HP on demand thing. Where 4 cylinders shut off until you really put your foot in it. And have it where you can turn it off for track days (and I bet most of us would keep it off :crazy03:). They are starting to use the technology, but not to it's full capability.

That'd be nice:thumbsup:

I'd still take a high winding, turbo/supercharger screamin' high hp 6 banger as long as the HP was in the Z06 range:thumbsup:

As for the mid engine design, it doesn't bother me one way or the other. There's still only room for 2 average sized people and a freakin' golf bad in most of 'em anyway:lmao:
If I want/need space, I'll take the land crusher:D

I think a lot would depend on what the car actually SOUNDS like. It could have 1,000 horsepower on tap, but if it sounds like some ricer with a tin can resonator on it, well, that's just not going to say "C-O-R-V-E-T-T-E" to most people. To them it will still be a sheep in wolf's clothing.

To me, nothing sounds worse than a six cylinder car(or truck)with loud mufflers. But back in the day I did have a 1979 Honda CBX motorcycle with an inline six double overhead cam that had a six into one open header. But it wasn't supposed to sound like a V8. Actually, at 9 thousand RPM, it sounded more like an Indy car! Wish I still had it....

See now that's COOL! I just can't imagine a vette with a horrible whiney V6. They could at least make it an I-6... :lmao:

All of the ol school guys will have a fit including myself.
The truth is cafe numbers may push the vette into a 6.
I have had a six in the Nissen 350 it was great for a ricer
but not for a vette.
Alot of lose talk right now I guess we will see soon enough.

Dead on Rich, I agree ...:yesnod:

That's just rediculous:nonod:

Now to be honest, I never cared much for the sound of the V6 Camaro either. But if you could make it produce, IDK, 5-600 hp and get decent mileage when you're not in the skinny pedal, then I'd be all over it:thumbsup:

1000 hp is still 1000 hp (or 300-600-???) regardless of what it "sounds like."

In the end, it's all about the performance.

If it works, then would would be laughing loudest?

The knucklehead laughing at the "odd sounding vette" or the guy in the "odd sounding vette" that just handed you your ass:lmao::lmao:

We're so wrapped up in the "ricer" sound, we miss the alternative.

Frankly, a lowered, properly flared and designed C6 with 4 pipes across the ass sticking out of the diffuser or valance, could sound like a can am racer and carry it off pretty darned well.

Hell, if all I cared about was sound, I'd build a 32 3-5 window with open side pipes.
Or, an early C3/4 vette, again, open side exhaust, a solid lifter (loper) cam, and a huge assed 4 barrell!!!1

Now that's "old school" sound:dancer01::dancer01:

Would be pretty much a single use vehicle, but it'd "sound good.":lmao:
