• Got the Contributing Memberships stuff finally worked out and made up a thread as a sort of "How-To" to help people figure out how to participate. So if you need help figuring it out, here's the thread you need to take a look at -> http://www.corvetteflorida.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3581 Thank you, everyone! Rich Z.

What oil do you use? I run Valvoline full synthetic 10W-30 but what do you guys run and why? Is it's use based on actual research or what? I have no clue, might be a better product but you guys tell me.

My decision to go with Royal Purple was mostly influenced by the results of a test posted in this earlier thread -> http://www.corvetteflorida.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2598

Contributing influences were posts I read by other people in reference to this brand of oil as well as results they got from the transmission fluid change using the same brand.

I felt that the turbos would probably benefit from the lubricating properties of Royal Purple and in particular may help reduce the wear and tear that the impellers will undergo over time. It doesn't take much to hear those suckers spooling up, so I think better lubrication to them will certainly help. Might even allow them to spool up even quicker. :shrug01:

I use Mobil 1,but I have used Royal Purple in some my other muscle cars I have had.I'm going to try Redline on the next oil change,Have friends who swear by it.Don't forget to use a good oil filter, you really get what you pay for in those,I currently use Bosch brand but I'm thinking I'm going to try something else next time.I have the magnet for my filter and a magnet drain plug,so far they are working and no major metel flacks, you will have some small small one's with a aluimian block.redlineoil.com

Use Castrol with Wix or NAPA filters. I change oil & filter every 3000 or less so see no benefit for me in synthetic.
When I was wayyyyyyy younger, I used to use Wolfs Head. I was taught just make sure the oil has greenish cast and not black.

I use what the book says...Mobil 1. One less decision I have to make in this world...... :D
:iagree: Not to mention...ther is no argument if somethng goes wrong!

I use Mobil 1 in the '01 and the Z06.

For the '69 BB, I use Pennzoil 20w-50.

These have been working for me!

Here is my take on this oil issue...
For many years I have used Castrol oil, usually a 20w-50 in most of my cars, to my memory, after changing the oil and filter, most of these cars seemed to run better, less oil usage, better fuel economy, etc.
But we are now faced with many different "oil formulations", how are we supposed to make an informed decision?
I tr to keep it simple, if the oil you have used in the past, on any other cars, seemes to work for you, then just upgrade that oil to what you need in your Vette.
You will find hundreds of compairsons of any oils lubricating qualities, but what you need to look for is the oils ability to remain viscous at low and high temps, in relation to the environment around them.
You would not want a 20w-50 oil in canada, it would become heavy syrup in winter, as such, the same oil in Florida may remain to thick to allow easy start-up, which creates an unnecessary load on the internal parts of the engine.
As I have stated before, I have always been a 20w-50 guy, now I am changing my thoughts on this.
I think that a lighter oil, say, 5w or 10w, may actually be more beneficial in the long run. However, if you have an engine with over 50k miles, you may want to run a heavier oil or an addative to a lighter oil.
I have been using 20w-50, on my next change I will try a synthethic 10w-40 and keep you up on this.
We shall see,

Joe B.

OK I still like Valvoline but I think along with the K & N oil filter I regularly use I'll move to the 20W-50. The 454 was rebuilt but she shows 96K miles and I think a bit of thickness is a good move. Think I'll ad the drain plug magnet as well (can't hurt)

I didn't really want to open up this old thread, but a friend of mine read quite a bit on www.bobistheoilguy.com and talked with a lot of friends and tried out Castrol 0W30, this is a Castrol oil that is made in Germany. It has more the characteristics of a 0W40. I gave this a try in my Z06 and have been very pleased. Much smoother than after my changes with Mobil 1 5W30, and the engine runs quieter, especially at idle.

I have been using Royal Purple 75W90 in the differential and Amsoil ATF in the tranny.

Been using the Royal Purple for a while now, and don't have any complaints about it. I suppose it is right difficult to come up with some positive evidence either way about particular lubricants being better than another brand. Maybe if you tore down an engine using each brand and compared wear measurements, but I can't see anyone realistically doing such a thing.

About the only thing I can think of that has changed noticeably is that it seems that the turbos spool up quicker now. Could just be they reached their break-in period, or it could be that the Royal Purple helps them more than the Mobile 1 did with the change in "slipperiness" of the oil....

Since I have several cases of the Royal Purple, and no particular reason to change, I imagine I'll be sticking with it for quite a while.

I do believe that using Royal Purple in the transmission DID help with the smoothness of the manual shifting, however. That did seem pretty evident to me...

Realistically, I think what we all want out of an engine lubicant is to STOP wear completely after the break-in period. One would think that the technology must exist to reach this goal.....
