Rolls over, but dist. doesn't turn

The engine rolls over fine, but I was getting no spark. When I removed the dist. cap anf turned the engine over the rotor doesn't move.
I have replaced the distributor and get the same results.

In the old days, that would mean the gear at the bottom of the distributor was not meshing with the gear teeth on the camshaft. Since you replaced the distributor already, then that means the camshaft is not rotating the distributor shaft. Pull off one of the valve covers to see if the valves are being actuated by the camshaft. A broken timing chain would immobilize the camshaft. But if the valves are working, then the camshaft is working, but maybe the gear teeth that drive the distributor are messed up.

What did the gear teeth look like on your original distributor?

Took off the valve cover and onlyt the 1st cylinder (#1) has valve movement. Appears to be a broken cam.

Ouch! :ack2: I hope those other valves aren't kissing the pistons.

Dayummm!!.... Can't say I have ever seen a BROKEN cam like that before. Some with worn down lobes or screwed up gear threads, but never just snapped into pieces!

Any ideas on how that happened?

Original cam or aftermarket?

Yeh, for sure, I been into cars for some 50 years or more, and never seen a cam break up like that before....gotta be first time for everything, I suppose...

I be a newbie on this forum...Gordon/StreetKnight suggested I flip over here for a view....I been on other forums for long time now...ten years nearly...12 on the net in general....

so hello everyone...

Here are a couple of other pics.
We decided to tear the whole engine down and found rod caps in the oil pan and a very messed up piston with a bent rod.
Needless to say we are rebuilding from the bottom up :ack2:

Steve, what the heck happened? Obviously this didn't happen sitting comfortably in a garage. I have heard of cams breaking before, but not like that.

Joe B.

My son bought this engine from a local part time engine builder.
The guy had built it for his 4x4 and lost his full time job so he needed to sell the engine.
My son bought it for $1500.00. It was suppose to be all new parts, 60 over, etc... It does have a nice 10qt Moroso pan, Holley 780 dual feed, Holley intake and an MSD Distributor. We even heard it run on the engine stand.

Needless to say, he drove the 3 miles from the friends house that helped him do the engine swap and as he turned the corner it quit. The pictures show what we have been finding.
When confronted today, he said that the cam was the only thing that wasn't new. What a BS artist. The 7 angle valve job. Oops they left all the carbon build up, the new 60 over pistons, oops, they are used 40 over pistons. The new springs, now why are the springs a little different from one another, the push rods are 2 different styles and the lifters are very beat for something that was NEW!

Kinda sucks, but it is a buyer beware world and he got screwed.

Mayun Steve,

at least you haven't lost your sense of humor over the whole issue and have looked to the bright side (with all the gadgets that came with it).
:sorry: for your troubles my friend!

Thanks for the offer.
The engine is for a GMC 4x4 pick up.
He has decided to just buy an assembled long block from Jegs. Everything will be new and hopefully worry free.

I threatened the person that sold us the bad motor with a law suit. He told too many people that everything was new and that the engine was built to handle a 500 shot of nitrous. I requested a $500 refund and he agreed but asked for a couple of weeks to put it together. I told him that in the mean time I will get depositions from the people he told about the engine, photos of the parts that were in the engine and have my lawyer draft a suit incase he fails to follow through.
