University of Iowa Farm Machine Music

This incredible machine was built as a collaborative effort between the Robert M. Trammell Music Conservatory and the Sharon Wick School of Engineering at the University of Iowa. Amazingly, 97% of the machines components came from John Deere Industries and Irrigation Equipment of Bancroft Iowa, yes farm equipment!

It took the team a combined 13,029 hours of set-up, alignment, calibration, and tuning before filming this video, but as you can see was WELL worth the effort.

It is now on display in the Matthew Gerhard Alumni Hall at the University and is already slated to be donated to the Smithsonian.

Holy Mackerel!!! That is REALLY cool. The video was FAR too short, though.... You should hear it through some really decent speakers. Jammin!!

Don't think it has any marketing potential, however........ And yeah I can see where it took all that time to set it up. :crazy03:

Yeah, OK, I took that one hook line and sinker..... It's fake. An exercise in computer graphics, in my opinion. No WAY someone could align anything the get balls bouncing off of a vibrating filament (piano wire or whatever) in such a way that the bal would land same place every time. Same with those chimes and xylophone type bars.

Had me going there...... :sillyme: :sillyme:

I had no idea, someone emailed it to me and I thought it was pretty cool. I never thought of checking to see if it was real or not. I just did some checking and found the site of the place that did the animation. Now I know why the film ended when it did, as it progresses it becomes quite obvious that it is animation. Still pretty cool though. Here's the whole 3 minute film.

Yeah, the audio track is pretty cool sounding. But in a way I'm glad that no one spent the amount of time it would really take to even get close to what that graphic would have represented in real world effort. I think the doubts began to creep in after about the third time I watched it and wondered how i in the world they arranged for the balls to come out of the central bell shaped orifice in the xylophone bars to hit with precision. Then I noticed some comments made about it, and that's when the slap to the head came.... :sillyme: LOL! I guess there are more computer graphic nerds out there then there are musician nerds..... :)
