Water in battery?

In an addition to my post about instrument lights.....When I took the battery back to AutoZone it was under the 3-year replacement warrantee so I got a free one. I asked the guy to test it just to make sure it was the battery and not my charging system. It failed. He asked me if I ever checked the fluid level in the cells. I guess I'm the dummy 'cause I haven't checked fluid levels since the 70's when they started making "Maintenance Free" batteries. Not so with AutoZone's, top of the line "Duralast". He popped open the plastic caps (which were placed even with the top of the battery) and lo and behold most of the cells were below what is acceptable. He still honored the "freebie" but I learned a lesson. I guess I'm back to the 70's, checking fluid levels again?

Actually, with all the stories I have heard about cracked and leaking lead acid batteries, I prefer the gel style batteries.

Holy Crap....I have one of those Duralast Gold batteries in the Yellow Vette, I guess I had better check it.

Yea...color me surprised! Two black plastic caps that cover three cells. He took a screwdriver and popped them off and there it was, a look back into the 70's!!! I'm sure that is what caused my failure. He said it was almost 3 years old and being Florida......The car is garaged and probably doesn't have 5,000 miles on that battery. Good luck!
