• Got the Contributing Memberships stuff finally worked out and made up a thread as a sort of "How-To" to help people figure out how to participate. So if you need help figuring it out, here's the thread you need to take a look at -> http://www.corvetteflorida.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3581 Thank you, everyone! Rich Z.

What is rep power?

This can't be working that way as I read some posts and can't make any sense out of them or what they are actually being posted for. I'm sure some of my posts are taken this way by others, but there are some who's majority of post seem lost and they accumulate points.

I have my rep points turned off, but somehow they still seem to increase

Everyone is different, Rick. Some posts will mean more to some then to others. Heck, some posts may mean more to you later on that don't really now. For instance, a good post about alternator problems won't mean much to you until you start having alternator problems and look for help. So you may read a post a year old that is now relevant to you, and you may very well think that it was such a good helpful post, that it may very well deserve rep points from you.

Turning off rep points only makes them not displayed to other members. It doesn't block the points.

Well thanks for the lesson Rich. It makes complete sense now and I can see how it is a very usefull tool. I also get having the neg. turned off that can do nothing but cause problems.
Keep up the good work.

Forgive me for being slow to come to an understanding on this but... I still think that a way to deduct points would be necessary if it was to be an accurate representation of the person's "rep", as it were. Having a Moderator/Administrator approve the negative rep points would hold down abuse... if the person really deserves having their rep reduced, the reducer wouldn't mind writing the mod/admin and explaining why. It would also be cool to somehow show what posts gained the person the rep points. Links in the profile prehaps?

Anyway, I'm not a programmer nor own a site, so I don't know how much work that would be. Just having the approval process would give the admin/mods more work to do... making it a personal choice on whether or not to implement it. As others have said, I don't see too many issues with possible abuse here, since most of the posts I have seen are mature and thought out with a few pointed exceptions.

Used properly, it lets a "new" guy like myself know who knows their ish. I'll admit that I will trust what is said by someone whose rep power is greater than my post count.

FloridaZ makes some good points. As I mentioned earlier, I wouldn't care if they were gone. Just wouldn't matter one way or the other.

As far as more work, it's not a big deal to me if that were to be implemented. I think one would have to have a good reason though for me to approve removing someones points. It'd have to be for some type of abuse of the site, personal attack (which might actually be one of the few reasons anyone would get a vacation around here to start with,), an erroneous thread (glaringly obvious stuff not just an opinion or being simply misinformed) or for a totally BS response to a someone's question.

I really think it'd have to be pretty specific though.

Sorry, but I've been thought this a LOT with my other sites, and think the way I am doing it here without the negative rep points is best. I guess you are all just going to have to trust my decision on this.

So the rep points are basically of the type "if you don't have something good to say about someone's posts, then don't say anything at all". If you catch my drift......

I'm not challenging anybody's judgement here, just so we're clear on that. Just posting a few of my thoughts. What you have works fine, it's just in my nature to question what "is" and try to think up a better way of doing it. It's what makes me tune and fix the Vette, so try to understand that if it becomes annoying. :crazy03:

I understand and appreciate your position. A lot of times I'm the devil advocate just to stimulate conversation or try to get an alternate view of things.

It's how change happens and things get done:thumbsup:
