what's this supposed to do?

On my 72 BB sitting directly in front of ther distributor shielding is (what appears to be) a vacuum type switch/solenoid with one vac connection on one end and two on the other with a 2 wire plug in on one end also (wires are blue (2) and lt. gray (2).

All of my vacuum system works fine and normally other then the wipers wanting to do funky things when shut off, they want to stay up a few inches.

Any idea of what this devise is and what it's ment to do? I've looked at a vacuum diagram but it didn't enlighten me at all.

Can you post a pic so we can see what you're talking about? What do the vacuum lines from the switch/solenoid run to? It almost sounds like a vacuum advance for the distributor itself, to help control timing. But those lines are usually plugged into the base of the distributor.
