Need Help with chirping noise

Guys, I've got a noise coming from the front of the engine that sounds like about 40 crickets on steroids under there. With the A/C off, the noise is just barely there, but when you turn on the A/C it wakes ALL of them crickets up. Had the compressor replaced in March and have less than 1000 miles on it, so I'm thinking belt tensioner maybe. Looks like there might be an idler pulley as well. What should I do to prove what's making all of that racket? Is there any one part under there that's more prone to fail than the others? Looks like the A/C belt is seperate from the other stuff, so is it possible to remove the A/C belt and still be able to drive the Vette? It's a 2000 coupe with auto by the way. Thanks for any help you can provide.

With the labor involved do the idler, tensioner and belt . But for the fun of it make sure the compressor is not loose that would put the pulley out of alignment and make the belt sing

Andy,I would bet the Idler pulleys are making the noise!!The bearings should be replaceable!!I believe the small bearing runs less than $6.00 and $12.00 for the larger one at my Parts Plus Store,there not hard to change!!:thumbsup:I've replaced a bunch,their just Standard Alternator bearings!:thumbsup:

Junk, does the A/C belt run anything else but the A/C? Can I pull the belt off and drive it without the A/C just so it stops making that damn noise until I can repair the idlers? And do you by chance have the part numbers necessary, or do I have to get the numbers off of the bearings themselves? Might be awhile before they get repaired. Got a plane flight out of Florida tomorrow morning and I'll probably be gone all summer. Hafta fix them in the fall. Thanks for the info Junk!

No the A/C belt just runs the A/C,and it will take you about as long to just take the belt off as it will to fix it!! The BCA bearing #'s are 203 FF(3 Smaller) and 303SS(1 Larger) The A/C idlers use the smaller!!The main belt Idlers use 1 Smaller and 1 Larger!! BCA lists the smaller at $9.01 and the Larger at $22.00 my cost!! They've went up since I replaced any I guess!! Gates has the complete pulleys list the smaller pulleys at $18.68 my Cost $28.90 retail and the larger pulleys $22.28 my Cost and $33.10 Retail!!

Hope this Helps!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Only about 1.5 hours even if your dragging your Donkey!!:rofl1::rofl1::rofl1::thumbsup:
Maybe about 1 and a half DAYS :eek: !! I've got bupkis to work with :banghead: as far as tools are concerned in Florida. Was thinking about taking a razor knife to the A/C belt, driving it up to Massachusetts, and working on it when I get it here. Ain't quite made up my mind yet..............
Thanks for all the help you provide to all of us out here in "postville" "Junkie"!

Success!

Replaced the idler pulley, and the tensioner pulley and NO MORE SQUEAKS! :dancer01: :crazy03: :dancer01:
I didn't have to do the belt because Ferman replaced it when they replaced the compressor in March. Nice and COLD.......nice and QUIET now! Too bad I'm headed back to Boston this afternoon. Oh well.......back on the meds! Junk......I'm taking the old parts back to Boston, and will replace the individual bearings up there where I've got more tools and time. Thanks to Tom Adams :thumbsup: for providing ramps, jack, jack stands, torque wrench, assistance, and above all.......PATIENCE!
