C4 LT1 Distributer

Seems like a lot of C4's have had the distributer replaced. How do they generally fail and what are the indications it is going bad?

They sputter and have a hard time turning over, They fail mainly due to the water pump being right on them, Thats my assumption, Ive owned allot of LT1 cars and hate optisparks with a passion BUT that is how met Greg so...lol

I ended up doing this on my last LT.. Its an opti to LS coil pack conversion I got from Bob Bailey

Never a problem again!

There has been allot more Opti's blamed and changed than than there were bad ones!!:rofl1::rofl1::rofl1:
They can act all kinds of crazy,Pop,Fart,Backfire,Run till warm and just shut down,Run crappy till warm and then run perfect,Run perfect cold and then run crappy after warm,as in all electronic components they can do all sorts of weird things!!:shrug01::shrug01:

In several 100,000 miles and 100's of customers vehicles,I've only replaced 3 Opti Sparks!!
1 From Collision Damage!!
1 From Green Slime growing in it!!
1 Broken off screws in the rotor, and then I broke a tap off in it and Slung it up the side of the Mountain!!:lmao:
I've mostly found bad or corroded connections where the opti was blamed for the problems!!
Connections at Fuses,Wiring Plugs on ECM,Ignition Module,Coils,Opti Harness and Plug!!

I've ended up changing several Coils,Ignition Modules,Opti Harnesses,Opti Cap's and Rotors!!
If I'm changing out a water pump,I'll always check out the opti and usually replace the cap and rotor button as preventative maintenance!!

Happy Vetting!!

The reason I was asking about distributers was that I have a stubburn start problem. After checking the fuel pressure I discovered the pressure goes to 42lbs. and then drops to 0 after the pump stops. I was told that should not happen. I believe that. However once the motor starts turning over the pump should and does run constantly. Any way, I replaced the regulator, no change, pulled the fuel rail a placed in a tub over a towel atop the motor and turn the ignition on to cycle the pump several times and had no leak or even a drop from any injector. So.... I'm back to must be a spark problem. Replaced the ignition mode and coil with no noticable change. Pulled a plug wire and attached a plug to it and there is spark. Hooked up a timing light so I could watch as I tryed to start and it seemed like it didn't spark right away but when it did the motor fired up. Is there a delay before spark begins. I'v checked every connector I can find for corrosion and added Dielectric grease. I'm a little reluctant to pull the water pump just to check the cap and rotor with out being more sure of it being the problem. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

My guess is that you have a bad Fuel Pump!!:thumbsup:That thing should hold pressure above 30 Lb for at least a couple hours after the pump shuts off!!

I am sure that is the reason the pressure drops after the pump stops, but the pressure jumps to 42 when the ignition is turned on or trying to start and stays there as long as the motor is turning over. When it does start it comes down to about 35. So it seems it is getting fuel pressure when trying to start. It is just stubburn about starting. Sometimes when I'm about ready to try again and let off the starter it fires one or two cylinders for a few seconds and eventually starts and goes to about 1500rpm and slowly settles down to below 1000. Do you really think the fuel pump could account for all thats happening, or not happening? Again thanks for your reply. I need all the help I can get. I'm retired and could probably count all my brain cells on one hand.

Sure,I wouldn't of said it if I didn't believe it!! LT1's and LT4's aren't like the L98's,They Like plenty of fuel pressure!! 42 lb is about the bare minimum to start a LT1 or LT4!!If the pressure is dropping off to 0 purdy quick after the pump shuts off, theres a problem!!!
I personally want 45-48 at start up and like 39 or better running!!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

PS The pump isn't hard to change, takes maybe a little over an hour!
And be sure to change the sock and fuel filter too!!

What he said

Junk is right about the Opti being blamed for every hiccup we have with our cars. For example I had a water leak from the hose connection for the bottom radiator hose were it connects to the water pump. Last Friday it would not start and just ground away with an occasional fire and then it might run for 40 seconds and SES would come on and it would start to backfire and stumble until it stopped. All the places I talked to about this problem immediately said it is the opti. What they did not know was that I had put a new opti in the car less then 2 months ago. Today I had some time to look at it and pulled the wire plug on the opti and low and behold it had water in it and the pins were green as fresh spring grass. A little cleaning and it fired right up and runs like a scalded cat. ( No offense to you cat lovers).

As for the fuel pump like Junk said it is a snap I had mine out and in in less than 40 min. which was a long as I could go without a smoke.:lmao:

Just wanted to thank you for the help. I replaced the fuel pump and now the pressure does hold after the pump stops and it starts much much better. I am supprised the pressure is still just over 40lbs. at start and about 35 while running. But the problem is solved so ...So be it.
