Carb replacement

:banghead:OK I've just about had it with the Q jet carb.:banghead: I need some ideas of a good Holley or Edlebrock replacement (by model if possible). I run a 72 BB. I wouldn't mind loosing just a bit of power to get a good strong and smooth running engine. Wouldn't mind just a bit more smilage too. 98Softtail if you see this Joe get back to me on the Holley you have please.

I'm open to all ideas.

Ken, pm sent.

Ken,

Q-Jets are a pretty good carb. But if you get a carb that is not functioning properly it does not make a difference whether it is a Q-jet, Holley, AFB, whatever. It can drive you nuts.

Here is a recommendation. Go over to CF and do a search on Lars. Lars Grimsrud rebuilds Q-jets and tests them on his own Vette engine. He is located in Colorado. He did the one for my '69 big block almost a year ago. When I got it back from Lars, all I had to do was throw it on and reset the timing. Runs great! He does not refinish the carb, but he knows his stuff about Q-jets. I hope this helps!

Found several issues w/it, should run like new when we get it installed & tuned.

My 2 Cents Worth

I've always been a performance oriented guy.

Ever since I had my first problem with a Q-jet I discovered the Holley double pumper.

They won't get you better gas mileage (I never understood why anybody that owned a car that performed like a Covette ever cared about gas mileage) but it will give you excellent performance and better throttle response.

Typically a big block Chevy will use an 850 cfm Holley.

Give one a try and then let us know if you think it's worth messing with the Q-jet.

Ken, Hows all. Just to let ya know. Lars isnt rebuilding carbs or distributors anymore. He's into another venture of rebuilding motors.
I had many an edlebrock on my other vettes that were perfect out of the box. Good luck with it and see ya Sunday

That carb at rev extreme looks familiar? hope its mine.
Yes, i would imagine after sitting in a box all those yr. You probably found creatures living in it.

OK let me try to take this back to the beginning and you guys can tell me if I'm even leaning in the right direction.

About the time I had the Q-jet rebuilt I also changed all the plugs, put a new cap and Accel wires on and eliminated a "spark leak" from some damn place (thought they might have/maybe did cause the "flutter") . Now back to the carb. All of the above was caused by this "flutter" I speak of. Honestly whether its precieved, can be discerned as audable, or is a feeling, is very difficult to say. If a change in HP has occurred it's difficult to tell as I vitually never push by driving near the limits of the motors ability. I think I hear it as much as feel it but can find no exhaust leak and fixing the spark leak did not fix the problem.

I have faith in the carb rebuilders experience and ability but is simply an adjustment on fuel/air or such needed? Now as a last thought throw in that the fuel filter housing leaks. It's already been retapped with the self taping housing fixer none the less she still "dribbles" thus the thoughs of putting the Q-jet on the shelf and going with a Holley or Edlebrock.

I'm open to suggestions and anybody wanna join me finding the problem?

Call & setup an app. and we can put it on the dyno & log A/F to see if it is jetted right....and we will also set the idle air mixture at the same time.

72Rag, Yup! All ready to install & tune:thumbsup:

Ken, I was going to head over there on friday as well, to see if he could fit me in to do a tranny/diff fluid change. Maybe I will see ya there.

Ken, I could be wrong on this but, if it dribbles then it could be sucking air due to a negative air pressure when there is a positive fuel pressure or flow.

Ken,

Whatever you do, if you decide to stay with your current carb you need to get that fuel leak fixed. The threads on the fuel filter housing in the front of the carb are very easy to strip, if you are not careful and it sounds like someone has stripped yours in the past. It took me a long time to find a right dated carb for my '69 and it also had the threads stripped. Fortunately for me, Lars had the ability to bore the old threads out and retap, then inserted a heli coil to fix mine. I did not know that Lars was no longer doing carbs. He just did mine last November - December time frame.

With everything that you described I would take it to either Anti Venom or Rev Extreme, which ever is closer to you and have them give you a diagnosis. You have changed a number of things chasing this gremlin, I would get a second, professional opinion.
