Diff between H and X pipe

A buddy asked me this the other day, and I wasn't sure. I thought X pipes flowed better, but I was told that H pipes give a deeper tone. What is the truth about these two? or is that about it? thanx Kevin

Well, it depends.... When I went to the LG Motorsports X-pipe, I went to the 3 inch pipes, which definitely deepened the tone. Supposedly the X-pipe reduces the motorboat burble of the H-pipe crossover influence somewhat, and is supposed to be better at balancing out the exhaust output between the two banks of cylinders. Not sure the gases actually flow better but I would guess the transfer of gases from one side of the exhaust to the other would be easier with an X-pipe. Or if the X-pipe alone being the same diameter of the H-pipe would be deeper toned.

There are a lot of variables here to be considered. For instance, diameter of the pipes, all the way from the tubes coming off of the cylinder heads, to the collector, on back, can change the power band substantially. Even the lengths of those primary tubes can make a difference. Problem is, they all pretty much mean a tradeoff somewhere. In other words, gaining something here, but losing something there..... Changing your exhaust system really shouldn't be taken lightly, and you should try to understand all aspects of what will happen afterwards.

Rich, my exhaust system is completely stock.
I would like to get a little more rumble from my mufflers but don't want the loud noice of the Corsa Sport. I had those in my '02 and they had a nice loud rumble at take off that my wife would not like in the current Vette.
I don't know if this would make sense but would installing 3" X-pipe do the trick?

I'm not too sure that would make much difference. My exhaust is 3 inches from the header collectors back to the cat back connectors at the end of the X-pipe. This is then necked down to accommodate the stock diameter pipes of the STS turbos. I'm not sure you CAN just put in a 3 inch X-pipe with the stock exhaust manifolds and piping without some sort of adapter.

I think in your shoes I would try to find a 3 inch cat back system first to see if that helps. But bear in mind that the deeper tone may come hand in hand with the louder overall volume of the exhaust.

But I'm no expert, by any stretch of the imagination. I'm just going by what I experienced. Theoretically I thought that wider diameter tubing would naturally produce a deeper tone to the exhaust, which seems to have been the case for me. But I don't really have any idea of merely changing one part of the entire exhaust having the effect you want. All I know is that the LGM Pro headers through a 3 inch X-pipe and 3 inch high flow cats all pumped through those STS twin turbos produces one hell of an awesome sound. But it is also LOUD in the inside of the car as well, which may not set well with some people. Honestly, it took a while to grow on me. So what pleases me now may not really please you at all. :shrug01:

Matter of fact, some people believe that those 3 inch pipes with the headers may have been actually detrimental to the total power output those STS turbos can provide. Not sure you can prove it by me, though......

don't c6's have those factory electric cutouts or baffles, maybe you can get a bypass that keeps them open. Or is that just an option on the Zo6's??

Just the Z06. The only other way to get it is to buy Z06 mufflers to install on a non-Z06 C6
