For all you "gearheads" and "tuners" out there.....

I've pretty much got a handle on the LS and LT engines, but what can you tell me about the "Vortec" engines. I'm considering getting a Tahoe/Suburban in the 2003 to 2005 year range and would like to know if they can be "tuned" like the LS series engines. I'm not looking to mod it or tuning for maximum horsepower, but I sure would like to know that it was properly set up to deliver the best fuel usage possible. Can that be done??? I know that the LS engines can have the fuel matrix adjusted to provide proper air/fuel ratios at all throttle positions and would like to know if the same thing can be done on the Vortec engines. Are the Vortec engines aluminum or cast iron? Do they have aluminum heads? Any common pit falls/weak areas to be worried about? How is the ignition handled....coil packs, dist/opti, or something else? Anyone that has one of these engines and cares to comment on it, how do you like it? Is it reliable? Does it have enough ponies to get the job done? Have you towed anything with it, and how does it do THAT job? Thanks in advance for any replies and info..........

The Vortec engine is a great engine:thumbsup:

A lot of the Landcruiser folks are swapping them into the trucks in place of the IL6 Tractor/tow motor engine presently inside.

Depending on the year, you can expect on a heavy truck, fuel exonomy in the range of 13-15 around town and 15-17 on the highway.

Good torque for towing and hauling around a heavy vehicle in traffic. Will get that whale moving in traffic without a problem:thumbsup:

Most were very reliable.

Go over to www.ih8mud.com and do a search for the Vortec or Vortec Swap and you'll get a great deal of information.

I have the 5.3L Vortec in my truck and it is a great motor. It is sometimes too much motor for my short wheelbase single cab short bed. With wet road conditions it gets a little wiggly with no weight in the rear. I have never had a situation where I did not have enough power and it is set up for towing so it think the suspenstion will limit the amount of weight it will tow not the power or torque.

Before I had the corvette I had several older hot rod trucks and that was the engine of choice for swaps. Good choice I don't think you can go wrong.

Here is a photo of a vortech installed in a custom 67 blazer project from another forum that I belong to.

I'm hoping to make that the motor of choice for my landcruiser swap when the time comes.
Plenty of torque to get through the rough stuff, and still power to pull the beast with decent mileage.:dancer01:
