How did you come to live in Florida?

Nytro said:
Well I'll be honest with you I am having second thoughts about leaving now, I mean with all this pending legislation about allowing dogs to be able to join their owners at restaurents, well that is important legislation if i ever saw it, and it is extremely comfortating to know that the dogs will not be allowed to eat off the same plates as us, unfortunately they will probably still piss and crap when they feel like it, being dogs and all.

As you said...PENDING legislation. I don't think it'll pass, but then again, who'd havbe thought road kill would become a lawful delicacy in some states?:rofl1:

Your right, tax dollars are needed to offset the ever increasing population growth here for infrastructure, police and over water usage, the only thing that grew faster than that is the greed by builders, land owners and politicians who failed to plan properly for this population boom. The builders don't care how they tax the exsisting resources as long as the can jam 500 homes in a 10 acre parcel of land.

One thing at a time. You're right, there was/is huge greed on the part of landowners. Why? Because it's consumer driven. Since you can get 130+ more out of your house, why shouldn't you? I know if I sold, I'd do the same thing. If you and I have something that is at a premium to another, why wouldn't we sell it at that premium?
Again, it's supply and demand. As long as there are people that will pay the premium $$, the land costs will continue to stay up there. Even with the housing market leveling off and dropping in some areas, Florida, California and a few others are holding thier own and in some cases, increasing due to the prime waterfront and other amenities they offer.

Yes, the politicians and government in general failed miserably in thier planning efforts. I won't argue that point at all. And as long as "they" allow it, builders will continue to do it.

Registered to vote here? Do it...dump 'em and try an new batch of politicians.

And I didn't move here to retire, I am not retired, I am just lucky that I made enough money in my 30's and 40's so I don't have to work.

If you're not working...you're either retired or unemployed. Just because one doesn't draw a "pension" or SS, doesn't mean they're not retired. I'm retired once, don't draw my pension yet and still own a business. One day I'll say F**K IT! and sell this MOFO and retire...again. :D

That doesn't mean that I have to give it away to pay for roads and schools while greedy businessman and builders make a killing and whine all the way to the bank

I agree that I hate giving my $$ away to ANY governmental entity...local, state or FEDERAL! Regardless, do you drive in the ditches? If not, you still have benefit from the roadway development and maintenanace (if we can really call what county roads and DOT does "maintenance?").

Schools? Well, I no longer have children in public school. Maybe I can get them to remove that tax from my tax bill:rolleyes: I know you don't have to pay for that "up north":rofl1:

and could care less if there is enough services for the amount of homes they build. Poor planning, poor road planning, poor school planning, poor planning by the pea-brained politicians who see nothing but dollar signs, but plenty of shopping malls and cheap restaurents.

Sure, lets leave things the way they were. We'll have this massive influx of retiress and transplants, but we won't increase the capacity of our roads and we just won't "let" the developers build additional housing. Yep, thats the ticket. So, when the housing market is saturated, you;ll have a couple of choices to make:

1) Rent (ie: give your money away...again)
2) Pay much higher prices for permanent housing in a saturated market
3) Move somewhere else.

And once you get settled in, call the police, sheriff's office or fire/fire rescue and then bitch about the response times:rolleyes: When I started in the late 70's, my "zone" was from the Alafia River south to Manatee County, and from roughly 78th street/US41 and the city limits east to US301 and in some cases to SR39 including (appropriately named...Fort Lonesome.

The Brandon area zones were from essentially 301 or Lakewood road east to Turkey creek or SR 39 (depending on what time and which years) and SR 60 was the dividing line N/S.
So, Valrico...if I'm not tied up elsewhere...see you in about an hour and a half:rofl1:

Heart attack? Hang on...were a commin'........

You seem to take quite the issue with what you consider "poor planning."
While I'll agree with you to a point, remember that some of this "planning" is a direct result of the influx of bodies. You gotta stack 'em somewhere and you gotta school the kiddies;).

I agree we have waaaaayyy to many malls and shopping centers Everytime you turn around, there's another strip center going in while the one up the street sits partially vacant for months or more. We don't make good use of existing properties, thats for sure. But since kids are already on double sessions in most schools, the increase in students necessitates additional building thus additional funding.
We need to control the COST of this building better though and remove some of the greed.

And to make $130,000 in profit on resale, well thats ok but back home I built my house in 1982 for $75,000, sold it in 2003 for $695,000, now that was a good investment.

I agree:thumbsup: Couple of questions though?

When was your house here built? What was the purchase price?

I purchased mine here in the early/miod 80's for 52k. Now worth about 285k. Not bad for the area;).

Really sounds like things were much better in Mass. Better government, better housing market, less taxes, the Kennedys...oops, sorry, that one slipped:rofl1: ....so....pray tell....as the thread implies...why did you come to Florida?

Tennessee, North Carolina, Kentucky, I heard the only virgins left in those states are the girls that can outrun their brothers.

Or 1st cousins in some case;)

Ted Kennedy, he's a pisser alright, you forgot to mention Kerry, Barney Frank and Gary Studds. Out of those four three of 'em should be in jail, ones a murderer, one was acused of having sex with a 15 year old male page, and the other was running a male escort service out of his house. See now you can tell where my love of politicians comes from. I am a registered voter here in Florida, let me know when there is someone worth voting for, I mean after all the highest ranking politician in the state is named Jeb, whose next Luke and Daisy.

I believe the dog legislation has already passed in St. Petersberg, as far as driving in a ditch well sometimes you have to venture in there to avoid the maniac coming the other way passing a school bus.

I believe that living up North is better, more culture, museums, schools, less murders, way better food, nothing like going to the North End in the summer for the Italian Feast, or Seafood, grouper is nice but you could deep fry a shoe and it would taste good, and my God real Chinese food, where is Chinatown here ???. Theres nothing like a nice day in autumn, about 50 degrees, cool crisp air at Applecrest in New Hampshire picking your own pumpkin and apples. Cutting down your own Christmas tree in December, waking up on Christmas morning and there is about four feet of freshly fallen snow. Unlike here better wages, they don't pay like I've heard they do here, everyone I have talked to here bitches about the low pay, oh ya no income tax, thats a real benefit to the retiree's, they still get to pay all the other high taxes but they don't have to pay income tax on the pay they make working at that job they need to have to buy food and gas. Florida mentality reminds me of the guy who wins the lottery, all of the sudden he has millions to spend but doesn't know what to spend it on, just that he knows he has to spend it.

I'm not retired, maybe unemployed but I like to think of it as being exiled to a foreign land. :crazy03:

I have met some nice people here, some very nice people, like my friends Dennis and Vickie, wait there from St Louis, Ivo, oh ya he's from The Tri-State area, Bernie and Carole, wait from Maryland oh well I musta met a native Floridian somewhere along the line. Why did I move here, well to be honest I started to really hate the snow and cold and my wife wanted to go to Disney more than 10 days a year, so I bought season passes from Mickey for $660.00 and the first day I went to Disney I got stopped on I-4 and got a $185.00 speeding ticket. :lmao: But wait, I did my online traffic school and it didn't go on my record, what a joke that was. :rofl1:

Little did I realize though that there's no place like home, there's no place like home, theres no place like home. So I will click my Rubies together three times and hopefully I will wind up back home. Back home to my Red Sox and Fenway Pahk, The Bruins, Patriots and Celtics, Lexington Green for the annual reinactment of the Shot Heard Round the World, Santarpios for pizza, The Bay Tower Room for the best dining experience overlooking Boston Harbor from the 33rd floor, Fanuel Hall, The Boston Marathon, The North End for the best Italian food on earth, The Beanpot Tourney and Kowloon restaurent, the best damn Chinese Restaurent on the planet.

Nytro, what can I say to all that? :shrug01: You win

You make it sound so good, I think Ima Gonna start packin' now.
Can hardly wait for that first snow and think, all that free time to work on my vette while it's in storage for the winter:lmao:

...Larry:wavey:

From another proud NATIVE FLORIDIAN:thumbsup:

Nytro,

I guess this is why I-95 goes both north and south! Life is too short and if Florida is making you miserable, then it is time to get the hell out!

On, the other hand, I can't wait to get out of Maryland and get to Ft. Myers permanently. When I started looking for a location to retire I had two priorities. It had to be somewhere that I could play with my Vettes and play golf 12 months of the year. Where there other locations other than Florida, yes, but Ft. Myers worked for us.

So, do what makes sense for you. As someone on this site said a few months ago, "..if there was a perfect place to live, we would all live there!"

Good luck!

One day the in February 2002 the wife said "I want to move to Florida", and I said OK. My wife hated the winters in New England, she thought winter began on Labor Day.

Had to wait for my daughter to graduate in 2004, but we built in Riverview, and are loving it.

I moved down from NY to the Cocoa area three years ago and a 06 Z06 couldn't pull me back. The weather is more favorable to my health with sunshine to lift my spirit. Back in the 80's and 90's I'd come down in the summer for recreation and to visit family. I noticed it was often cooler and less humid than NY in the summer. The FL ocean breeze keeps it comfortable, I'm on the east coast. IMO the number of favorable months for outdoor recreation far exceeds anywhere else in the contiguous 48 states, except for So Cal. This year the northeast has had more storms and floods than FL and a heatwave exceeding 100 degrees. Central Fl high temps will now be in the 80's and 70's with some 60's until May, while the northeast is facing 6 months of cold snowy weather. Good luck to those who prefer the northern climate, you are much tougher than me.

Newbie here...

I've lived in South Florida since I was 6 months old. My parents were in show biz and Dad decided to retire here. So, practically a native, right?

Took a 10 year hiatus from the Sunshine State when I joined the Air Force. Spent 6 years in the service, living in Misawa Japan, Ft Meade MD, and then Myrtle Beach SC. Lived in SC for while then relocated to Fort Lauderdale in 1987. That's it in a nutshell.

Thanks, Rich Z for the invite to the site.

In 1978 I was selling cars in Youngstown Ohio. I sold cars so I could get a demo to drive back and forth to class in college. I went on a weeks vacation to Naples. The deal with my sales manager was that I would be at the sales meeting on Monday morning. I never made it back to Ohio and stayed here. I did not return to pick up the vette for 3 months.

What deilersip did you work at in Youngstown? Around that same time my dad worked for a chevy dealer in Youngstown, I will have to check later with him to see with one I don't remeber. I am from North Jackson Ohio my parents moved me down here in 1991 or so. Don't ever what to see snow ever agin.

I was born in Chicago, IL., grew up in Evansville IN. and moved to St. Augustine after serving in the U.S. Navy. I was stationed in San Diego aboard the U.S.S. Bristol County, LST 1198.

My father grew up here and always wanted to get back. All of my family on my father's side are proud natives of the Sunshine State.

when I first moved here there was a pretty bad love bug outbreak, so bad they sounded like rain hitting your windshield. Mosquitos were pretty bad too. Got stung by a scorpion. All the critters was an adjustment for me, coming from SoCal, but I'm used to it now.

I live on a highly wooded 46 acre lot with an 8 acre "gator pond." Until about four years ago the road I live on was a dirt one, which I didn't mind until I started keeping fun cars and cared about their appearance. My driveway is about 1/3 mile long and I had that paved as well, now life is good.

I live near the World Golf Village, and this area is changing fast...six days a week it seems every other vehicle on the road is a dump truck. subdivisions going in everywhere.

I was born in Buffalo, NY. Joined the Navy at 17 serving aboard the USS Carl Vinson, stationed in Alameda, Ca.
I Met my wife there who served aboard the USS Samuel Gompers. We then moved to my wife's home town, Kerrville, TX. after the Navy where I joined the Army National Guard. We lived there for like 9 years, long enough for me to become a Longhorns fan:D .

My mom moved to Leesburg, Fl and we'd come to visit on occassion, eventually making the leap moving here.
We've been here since 1996. Life was hard for awhile, had a car repo'd as it took awhile to find work. After awhile, (4+ years) things started to click for us and we moved to Weirsdale Fl.
We still have a hard time fitting in with people though. Some friends aren't accepting to the fact that we're doing well now and it's hard to make new ones around here.
We live right near the Villages, a huge retirement community, where alot of people look down their noses at "younger people":nonod: as if they're here to serve them:toetap05:
No matter, we're here to stay:dancer01: . I figure we'll join a Vette club and make a few good friends.:wavey:

I was born in West Palm Beach, my father in Gibsonton, and my Fiancee here in NPR.

The rest of you can go home now :P

(just kidding, some of the damn yankees are okay, oh.... Damn Yankees: A northerner who comes to FLorida and dosn't leave. thought some of you might need some help with the official cracker dialogue hehe.)

Yeah man. I was a yankee for many years before finally becoming a DAMN yankee. Or does Maryland qualify for yankeedom? :shrug01:

MD? Qualify? Yeah, I'd say so:lmao: Hey Ynkedad, he's a suggestion for making new friends in the area and warming up to the nearby "neighbors."

Uncap the headers and oh, IDK, 6k-6500 on the tach:hehehe:

I'm almost positive that you'll have new visitors before the engine cools:lmao:

That wouldn't work around here. The neighbors would like just start up their pickup truck to show you what THEIR motor sounded like. :D

Retired from NYS government 11/00 and immediately moved here to N Ft Myers. Should have moved many years ago and told NYS where to go. :wavey:

Yeah man! When I see how Maryland has gone (in the toilet, apparently) I am SO glad I moved out of there. Heck, half the guns I have would probably be illegal now in that state.
