safe overbore for an LS1

dopes that charge $500-750 bucks for tuning keep me in business lol

mail off your PCM to Eastcoast superchargers for $150 bucks for a mail order tune

It will be another few weeks before the motor is ready to fire.had to order new pistons today and they won't be here until wed or thur.It looks like it will be January before it's ready. The only tuner I know in Panama is orangman customs. They want $750 to tune it using HP. I have time to figure something else out on what to do about the tune.

I'm guessing this engine won't be balanced? Maybe things are slow and there's not a bunch of work out there but it took me a few weeks to get my pistons so I was just curious. I agree with Phil, I have never known anyone that charged $750 for a tune. That's crazy. A few years ago maybe $500 was tops but prices have come way down since then.

Don't let yourself get into another harwood deal Mike. At least you get a lot of good info on here from Phil and Tracy.

The motor will be balanced Bob.Once the pistons are here they will go back to the machine shop along with the rods ,crank and flex plate.

I think a lot depends on the tune itself. The tune on my car is going to be rather expensive, simply because EVERYTHING is customized, and forced induction is involved. There really isn't much at all that is still stock anywhere underneath that hood now. I was watching Jim Smith doing the initial tuning on my car, and he was having to spend a substantial amount of time talking to the guy who did the fuel injectors trying to get a baseline for the tune based on their fuel flow and then taking readings for each run to try to see how the engine was responding to the A/F mixture over the RPM range. EVERYTHING needed to be modified since EVERYTHING is new.

It's quite possible that the prospective tuners are looking at Mike's engine as being quite time intensive because of what they might run into following up on Chris Harwood's work as well as the customized nature of the engine. WOT tuning isn't going to be the issue as much as the driveability problems that could be lurking in there because of the nature of the work that has been done.

Yeah, doing a tune when only bolt-ons are involved shouldn't really be an expensive proposition, as a tuner with experience likely already knows everything they need to do before they even start. But I think the more complicated the hardware changes, then the more complicated the tuning process is going to be afterwards, simply because of the number of unknowns that have to be compensated for within the tune.

So Mike, how many engine rebuilds will you have paid for when this is all over with? Seems to me you probably have an engine that has been rebuilt quite a few times.

Man, it's a miracle that this crap hasn't driven both of us to some serious hard liquor....

This is the 3rd time in 2 years Rich. I feel like I have a curse on me and my car. When I ger it back I wonder if it will be better if Ijust park it my garage. I was thinking that a design in the blue stripe would look good. I may put ghoast $ signs in it.:lmao:
This has not been one of the most fun things I've done in my life.

You still have a sense of humor. I really hope you and Rich can drive down on Jan 15 so I can maybe beg a ride around the block. :dancer01:

Most of these really good tuners have been at it a long time and they'll have a base line tune already setup for your engine. I would talk to Phil, Tracy, Anti Venom for pricing. Maybe just go with the tune you have, drive down here on the 15th and let them tweak it. I really think you'll save a lot of money.

Just a suggestion Mike.

A big cube/big boost build is a very time consuming process, but it needs to be done right. Unlike a mild bolt-on tune where we can go right into the parameters we need to tweak and be done in an hour or less, Rich's type of build can take an entire day or more (especially if it is a 2 bar or 3 bar SD tune).

Phil is right, your build he could do a great job on for a fraction of the cost. I have been using him for the bolt on 5th gen camaros, etc.

But we're talking about Mike's 383. :D

I agree just thought maybe you were thinking we were talking about Rich's car. So you agree that Mikes should be an easy tune and not very expensive?

Personally, I believe whoever quoted $750 to tune Mike's car is being a bit excessive. But it may really be a case that the guy just doesn't want to touch this with a 10 foot pole and quoted a high price knowing Mike wouldn't accept it. A lot of people are aware of what has taken place in Blountstown and may be real reluctant to get involved at this point.

That would be a shame if that's the case Rich. I know these guys down here wouldn't be afraid to get involved.

I still think that's Mikes best option. It will run with the tune that's in it so bring it into a members shop and get her done right at a fair price. JMO.

Mike could always find out when Aaron Scott can get Jim Smith back in town to do his tune for him. Not sure what he would charge, but the guy seems to be VERY competent.

I have the tune situation covered. Charlie Stumph will take care of the tune for me.I'll let him know when my motor will be ready to fire so he can be there to check what I have right now and tweak it to be more driveable. He has acess to a dyno for the final tune once I have 1000 miles on it.

It has to be ready for my trip to Clearwater on Jan 15th.

Can we discuss the ride around the block I requested? :dancer01:

Good to know you're back on track Mike with the car. It will be a center of attention for some of us. I'm relly looking forward to meeting you.

It would really be nice to see Rich also.

Are they suggesting to you to drive the car for 1,000 miles before doing the WOT dyno tune? I just checked the break-in procedure from LME and Bryan doesn't mention anything about that. Matter of fact, Aaron had my car on the dyno as soon as it was together enough to do that.
