Speed trap rant

Daffy

Junkyard dog
Lawtey, on 301..My first clue should have been the billboards I've seen there for years that say"Speed trap ahead"...Well before the 45 sign they gun you down(wrote me for 60)..The cop has a bad additude, very cocky(Probably because his little craphole:ack2: of a town has nothing going for it except that folks have to drive thru it to get somewhere worthwhile). Then the ticket says you can elect to go to court but if they find you guilty they can practically triple the fine(from 185 to 500). I guess that's how they make sure you don't try to stand up for justice. Now I drive the extra 35 miles not to go there. That place is a disgrace to the state of Florida.

Lawtey

It's on US 301 just off I-10....It's the shortcut from Jax to Ocala.. But it's not worth it to me anymore...

Sorry you got Busted!:banghead:

:hmm: IMO....A good Radar Detector may have saved you.?

Val-1 :yesnod: Has saved me countless times by warning me way in advance of any speed traps. Not to mention, it lets me know if there's more than one LEO in the vicinity who's actively pinging. $400.00 is a small price to pay compared to ticket fines and points:banghead: . JMHO:thumbsup: .

I Highly recommend them!

Not worth it

The speed limits bounce up and down like a rubber ball all the way from Baldwin to Ocala. I guess I've just dodged the bullet for several years. It's an 82 mile stretch and I figured out I can stay on the interstate for an additional 35 miles with my cruise control on and no stress and it's only about ten extra minutes and a few bux for gas. That way I never have to be victimized like that again. I have the utmost respect for law enforcement but this guy is an insult to the profession. Right down to writing the ticket for exactly 15 over so it would move me up another price/point category. Kinda like something out of a bad B movie script. Now I understand why somebody spends the money for the billboards. I just wanted to warn my fellow members about it if you ever have to go thru there to beware of billy bob and Jetrho. Yes there were two of them writing tickets as quickly as they could. Like shooting fish in a barrel with a license to steal. I think I'll stay on the Interstate, that way if I get pulled over( by a professional) it's because I voilated the law, not simply driven into an ambush by LEO terrorists.

.........and it has been like that for over thirty years. I was stationed at Mayport (USN) near JAX in 1967. My trip home to Largo/Clearwater took me right through that town. It was well known then to be a speed trap. Sorry you got busted. Speed limits are usually set for good reasons, but in that little town they use trickery to fatten the coffers... SUCKS. I agree, disgrace to Florida. It's probably why that stretch of road has not flourished while the rest of the state has. People stay away from there  ........Tom:mad:

I think AAA has that listed as one of the towns to stay away from. In fact, I think they route folks around it if it's on a trip tick. Also, Waldo is another town that monitors the speeds closely

Now that would be fun:dancer01: Sucks to be you ..whoever is in the slowest Vette though!:hehehe:

NO such think as a slow Vette!

If someone showed up in a Mustank then they would be at the tail end and get caught!

Ah yes. The classic bear defensive measure. Make sure you go into bear country with someone who runs slower than you do.......... :lmao:

I take 301 about 6 times a year on the way to see the grandkids up in Virginia. Hop onto 301 from I75 just before Gainesville using SR24. The bad stretch runs from Waldo, through Starke and then Lawtey. All three towns are known traps but I just slow down to what's posted when going through. I use my wife's non-discript Suzuki wagon most of the time, which doesn't stand out, but I'm sure if your over the limit the only thing they wouldn't stop is a marked State Trooper.

Yup, that's the route. We know about the speed traps and just stay cool going though those towns.....

I travel that "friendly" little corridor several times a year to visit the wife's parents in Jax. We were heading up there late one night and they had a little checkpoint setup in Starke. They were actually routing every car on 301 into a parking lot to look for drunk drivers, and since they had you pulled over anyway they did the whole license, registration, proof of insurance, seat belts, rear brake light, and anything else we can ticket you for checks. I still can't believe they actually closed off a section of 301 to do this. Anyways, my advice is to follow the traffic laws to a "T" when going through that area.

Today I went clear to Lake city to avoid that craphole....Since it was all interstate it didn't take much extra time...I do not plan to ever see that place again...

Does Lawtey have a chamber of commerce? You might want to drop them a line (or even to whatever tourist concerns are there) to let them know that their speed trap practices are being noted and is costing the town revenue that those speeding tickets may not be able to make up for......... :shrug01:
