The Vats shuts down the fuel pump 1st,and if you get that By passed then it will shut down the Ignition!! Some of the later ones shut down Starter, then Fuel, then Ignition!! Thats why I said it's a good system,a thief will be there All Day!!:thumbsup:sandman said:Hey Junkie
Well I cleaned the contacts on the key and tumbler and this morning my car did the same thing. It just would crank and crank. I ordered a new door switch from GM for 25 dollars. It is to be here today. I am going to have the fuel filter changed today and have them hook up the code reader and see what fault codes they get on it. I will bet a paycheck I will go home today and it will fire right up.:banghead: I have4n't checked for spark yet but I think if it were not getting spark that that would not be intermittent. It would never start. I am wondering if it is getting any gas. Or maybe it is temp. related.:banghead: During the day I never have a problem. Fires right up every time. But in the mornings It just won't start most of the time.
Mine could be shutting down the fuel system. Shouldn't it reset after 10-15 minutes? I waited ten to 15 minutes this morning. Should I be able to hear the fuel pumps waking up when I turn the key?gmjunkie said:The Vats shuts down the fuel pump 1st,and if you get that By passed then it will shut down the Ignition!! I don't think it will tell you anything unless there is something not right with the Vats mogul itself,it may if it is something other than the VATS!! You can by pass the Vats, buy measuring the resistance in the pellet and getting 1/4 watt resisters at radio shack to make the right resistance!!! The wire is under the knee pad by steering column!! It's a small 2 wire plug, just unplug it and stick the leads of the resister or resisters in the Car side of the plug!! Inside this the heat shrink is 3 resisters on this one that is by-passed!! But Remember This car will start then Hot Wiring or by breaking the lock out of the column and a screwdriver !!!:ack2: :thumbsupsandman said:Is there a handheld decoder I can hook up when this happens again that will tell me what it might be wrong?:shrug01:
The Vats usually will reset itself 10-15 min. but sometimes it's as long as 35-40!!! But after it resets if it don't get a good contact again,it will go back through the reset mode!!!:thumbsup:sandman said:Mine could be shutting down the fuel system. Ah I see.So it could take longer. then 10-15. I wonder if I am triggering it when I get into it in the mornings!!:nonod: But I do what I do every morning is the same.:banghead: Well I will change the switches. I am going to change the fuel filter today also. I am sure it needs it.gmjunkie said:The Vats usually will reset itself 10-15 min. but sometimes it's as long as 35-40!!! You can Trouble shoot the column and key easy while your there!!! Put the leads of the ohm meter in the plug of the column and watch it closely while you put the key in and turn to the start position,(You should get a resistance reading as soon as u put the key in!!) and if it breaks contact while doing so at any time, the pellet or lock contacts are bad!! Or Both!!: Even just stick the key in and try to shake it around,if it looses contact there is something bad!! :thumbsup:sandman said:Ah I see.So it could take longer. then 10-15. Great I didn't know that. I will do that also before I spend the money on a key or pellet.:thumbsup:gmjunkie said:You can Trouble shoot the column and key easy while your there!!! I forgot to ask,Does the security Light stay on solid when it does this???:shrug01:sandman said:Still doing it. Friday I get off work and left the doors unlocked to eliminate the security sand it did it to me again ,just sat there and cranked. So I got home and took a taxi back to the base and it fired right up.:shrug01: :banghead: I ma out of ideas unless it is the fuel filter or injectors.
With the Key in??:shrug01:sandman said:No, It will flash when I open the door and when I shut the door it goes out.
