I keep getting conflicting info. I've got 3 old cars, 2 Corvettes, one old Chevy.

Was told that YOM tags had to be original, unrestored. They could not even be touched up.

You have to compose a letter and send the letter along with the license tag to Tallahassee to be approved.

NOW I'm hearing that restored tags are allowed.

Does anyone really know. :confused:

Thanks for the link, Shadow.

That link indicates that restored, or even "touched up" tags will be rejected, and that's what I was told.

I also did a Google search, which led me to the "unauthorized" Florida DMV guide. That also indicated that restored, altered, touched up, repainted, etc. tags would be rejected.

The reason for my question here? Have a guy in my car club who bought a restored tag....from a license plate vendor. The vendor told him that you COULD register them. He asked me what I thought. Why he asked me is a mystery, as I've lived in Florida full time for only 18 months.

I told him that I didn't think you could register restored tags, and that just maybe the vendor had a vested interest in telling him a little white lie to make the sale.

Ok, just had a little time to research this today. Sorry, yesterday was pretty hectic!

After 30 minutes listening to the DMV recording, I got a human on the phone.

Dante' (something very interesting about that name associated with DMV:rofl1:)
who was actually quite a lot ot help:thumbsup::thumbsup:

requirements:

1) Must be same year as vehicle.
2) Must be UN-RETOUCHED, "not refurbished in any way" from it's original condition.
3) Legible for law enforcement purposes.

If it meets these requirements, you have to submit it (physically) to the DMV who will make the determination.

The application can be found at:

www.flhsmv.gov

Go to the left side of the page and click on the "forms."
Download the application and make the submission.

Hope this clarifies things for you a bit?

I think that this EBAY license plate vendor that my bud dealt with is blowing smoke where the sun don't shine. :D

My bud is going to attempt to get this tag registered, by filling on the form, writing the letter, and sending the tag to Tallahassee.

I'll repost to this thread.....could be a month or more....to let you know if he was able to register it.

Thanks Chuck, that would be great.
If they do approve a touched up or reman'd tag, then he set's the precedent for future applicants with similar tags (if one hasn't already been set?).
At least on here, we'll have the precedence in writing:D

Then thinking about it, when did the state care about precedent and fact?:lmao::lmao:

Found my tag on ebay. Unrestored and in great shape. (7MI752) Orange County Dealers tag. Sent it to tallahassee and had it back, registered in a short time. A couple of extra bucks but who cares. She's my 72 Goldie.

There is no way I'd recommend doing this ... BUT,

I wonder what would happen if a person were to submit a non-restored tag to the DMV, wait for it to be approved, and then restore it before displaying it on the car. If you were subsequently stopped for a traffic infraction do you think the trooper would notice or even care that the tag in question had been restored? As long as it checked out with the DMV records I kind of doubt anyone would care.

It's my understanding that the tag must be in excellent shape to begin with or they wont even consider it so their would be no need to restore even after.:thumbsup:

Yep.

If it isn't in good enough shape to be legible (unretouched), then they wont pass it.

Most cops (troopers alike) dont even realize the details of this law, or what's required to get one approved.

With that said, "most" will likely run the plate, if clean, assume it was passed that way, and move on. Frankly, there are better things to spend your time writing tickets for.

That said, if you happen to get the one in a thousand that knows, you're tag is now considered "altered" and could be seized:eek:

I'm bringing this "oldie but goodie" thread back TTT.

JUST yesterday, I got a RESTORED 56 Florida tag back from Tallahassee. It was approved for use on my 56 Chevy. :)

I had been told that restored and even touched up tags would be rejected. I then heard "through the grapevine" at various car shows, etc., that the state had become more lenient about tags.

SO, I had a restored 56 Florida tag. Wrote the letter, copied the documents needed, and sent those along with the tag to Tallahassee about 2 weeks ago. I also enclosed a check for $60.00

Tag came back yesterday with a 4 2012 sticker and a new owners card.

Life is good.

SO, if anyone want to try the YOM tags with a restored tag, it can be done. Post here and I'll tell you exactly what I wrote, and what documents I photocopied to send in.
