How did you come to live in Florida?

Joined the Navy at 18, moved to Hawaii, blew my knee out playing football out there. Navy reconstructed the knee and sent me packing. Got a job with the Federal Govt, moved here to sunny Tampa over eight years ago now. Love Florida and will have at least one residence here the rest of my life.

I read you had sold it. Still looking for a ZR1? Are you going to the Roger Dean show this coming weekend?

How did you come to live here

I am an original. Born at NAS Jacksonville, Fl, I travelled around as a Navy dependent and was living in Jacksonville when drafted into the military. Spent 25 years serving the nation and retired and came back HOME!!!

Parents decided to move to Florida in 1991. I was only ten at the time, so didn't have much say in the matter. Can't complain though, life has been pretty good in Florida so far

I actually went to visit relatives in upstate New York back in December 04. Plenty of snow on the ground and can't say I missed living in it. I figure it is easier to go visit it when I want than have to deal with it on a daily basis for five to six months.
I AGREE,:wavey:
We usually visit New York and Canada every couple of years around Christmas time. My kids absolutely love the snow, and they (canada) have an awesome lighted Christmas display in the park.
Typically we'll stay at the Court Yard (Marriott) on the Canadian side, visiting the falls and all of the tourist attractions they have just over the bridge.

Always nice to return to the warmth of Florida after a dose of that!
Although, this year we're going to Gatlinburg, TN. as we love that area in the mountains too :dancer01:

I was born and raised in Jacksonville. Moved to Orange Park 20 years ago to avoid the traffic...well, the traffic caught up to me.

 I think the rest of the country is starting to figure it out :yesnod:

We were born and raised in Buffalo NY. Hated the snow so when a job came up in Nassau Bahamas, teaching we took our two babies (3 & 5 years) and went to warmer climates.

Eventually went back to the States for a year, Louisville, Kentucky, which led to another job in the oil industry with Hess oil in the US Virgin Islands, St Croix. We lived on that Island for 5 years before being transferred to another Island, Manhattan. Lived in NJ and commuted to NY till we had the opportunity to buy land and build a house in Central Florida. We love the moderate climate and driving the Vettes year round. Lots of car guy events and NO SNOW!

My wife and I got married in September 1968 and planned to drive to Washington DC for the honeymoon. As we were nearing the city, I saw a sign for Miami. I asked my wife "What do you think?" She said, "Let's do it" and we kept driving south. We had a wonderful 10 days stay in Florida and made it a point to return somewhere in Florida at least once every couple of years even after our three children were born. Around 1983 we rented a condo in New Smyrna beach and fell in love with the area.
My wife and I both took early retirement (she in 1998 and I in 2002). Three years ago we bought a house in New Smyrna Beach. We spend Sept-Nov in Florida, Dec-Jan in New Jersey, Feb-May in Florida and June - Aug in New Jersey. Yeah, I know, Dec - Jan in New Jersey? Our friends call us the coo coo birds. I bought an open trailer and tow the Vette back and forth. It stays in Florida Sept - May.

We love it. We are enjoying life as much as possible.
It is later than we think.:crazy03:

Moved here in 1990 from Germany. Dad retired from the army. Been here ever since. Definately don't miss the snow!!

i'm as bit different in that my family was from south florida, but i wasn't born here, lol! they started the migration north during the second world war when there wasn't much in the way of work down here, and i was born in 44 in perth amboy new jersey (of all places). spent loads of time vacationing down here in florida during my growing up years and went to school and stayed in the washington dc area for about 12 years. taught in a jr college just outside of annapolis for a bit, then back to nj for 8 years. still traveled down to so florida whenever i could (had a brother in law at the UM school of law, so i always had a place to stay), and just decided back in the late 70's enough was enough and it was time to come "home". never looked back and never regretted the move!

Ted Kennedy, he's a pisser alright, you forgot to mention Kerry, Barney Frank and Gary Studds. Out of those four three of 'em should be in jail, ones a murderer, one was acused of having sex with a 15 year old male page, and the other was running a male escort service out of his house. See now you can tell where my love of politicians comes from. I am a registered voter here in Florida, let me know when there is someone worth voting for, I mean after all the highest ranking politician in the state is named Jeb, whose next Luke and Daisy.

I believe the dog legislation has already passed in St. Petersberg, as far as driving in a ditch well sometimes you have to venture in there to avoid the maniac coming the other way passing a school bus.

I believe that living up North is better, more culture, museums, schools, less murders, way better food, nothing like going to the North End in the summer for the Italian Feast, or Seafood, grouper is nice but you could deep fry a shoe and it would taste good, and my God real Chinese food, where is Chinatown here ???. Theres nothing like a nice day in autumn, about 50 degrees, cool crisp air at Applecrest in New Hampshire picking your own pumpkin and apples. Cutting down your own Christmas tree in December, waking up on Christmas morning and there is about four feet of freshly fallen snow. Unlike here better wages, they don't pay like I've heard they do here, everyone I have talked to here bitches about the low pay, oh ya no income tax, thats a real benefit to the retiree's, they still get to pay all the other high taxes but they don't have to pay income tax on the pay they make working at that job they need to have to buy food and gas. Florida mentality reminds me of the guy who wins the lottery, all of the sudden he has millions to spend but doesn't know what to spend it on, just that he knows he has to spend it.

I'm not retired, maybe unemployed but I like to think of it as being exiled to a foreign land. :crazy03:

I have met some nice people here, some very nice people, like my friends Dennis and Vickie, wait there from St Louis, Ivo, oh ya he's from The Tri-State area, Bernie and Carole, wait from Maryland oh well I musta met a native Floridian somewhere along the line. Why did I move here, well to be honest I started to really hate the snow and cold and my wife wanted to go to Disney more than 10 days a year, so I bought season passes from Mickey for $660.00 and the first day I went to Disney I got stopped on I-4 and got a $185.00 speeding ticket. :lmao: But wait, I did my online traffic school and it didn't go on my record, what a joke that was. :rofl1:

Little did I realize though that there's no place like home, there's no place like home, theres no place like home. So I will click my Rubies together three times and hopefully I will wind up back home. Back home to my Red Sox and Fenway Pahk, The Bruins, Patriots and Celtics, Lexington Green for the annual reinactment of the Shot Heard Round the World, Santarpios for pizza, The Bay Tower Room for the best dining experience overlooking Boston Harbor from the 33rd floor, Fanuel Hall, The Boston Marathon, The North End for the best Italian food on earth, The Beanpot Tourney and Kowloon restaurent, the best damn Chinese Restaurent on the planet.

OHHHHH He's from B-A-S-T-O-N..........

Agreed!!!! Sounds like the typical "carpet bagger" rant to me!

I always wondered if it was "Sssssso great" back home, why the hell do they move here?! I've traveled all over America and pretty much the food is the same everywhere you go. Sorry for all you northerners but it's true. They will whine about how I'm full of it or I don't know but hey, I've been there and yes it does taste the same. The only difference is that everyone feels that the apple from their own tree is the sweetest!

Yeah fine, wages up north or higher, but so is gas tax, sales tax in some places, not to mention the state taxes elsewhere that we don't pay down here. Not to mention you have to pay tax for road salt and all that other crap like liquid petroleum, so I guess what I'm saying is, it balances out in one way or the other. But I figured out why they move down here in the first place Tv_dir.......................it's a five letter word that starts with a P, ends with a Y, and has an USS in the middle! They may deny it but they know it's true!!!! And you my fellow swamp rat know what I'm talking about.

But what do I know right? I'm from a "third world country within the U.S." where we've been critisized for too much culture. Our museums like to depict the history of our state which involves lots of conquests and smoking by some Spanish guys in armor. Too many schools with too few teachers. More food festivals then they ever seen in their lifetime in a one week span but are too afraid to attend because of that "too much culture" walking around. I guess that's why those "so many" murders come into play. Or maybe Chinese food that's "too real" because we cook our s#!t with dogs and cats.....the way it was meant to be! And Chinatown! Where's your Little Havana, Little Haiti, Dominicantown? Or even Black Korea?

Ah, but no South Beach and the Grove? That one hurts huh?! Nothing like taking your boat out DAILY only about two miles off shore to a non-stop plethora of fresh fish. Who needs to go out into the vicious waters of the northern Atlantic when all the good eatin' is right in the harbor......manatee, f@(kers!!!!! So keep your snow, your cold, and your whining. We'll keep bangin' the p@$sy while you dream of it. Oh, but what do I know.....I'm from a third world country.:shrug01:

Guess I sound like one of them now. Oh well! :lmao:
